There have been performance drop reports by a few, but I fail to see how a performance loss is even possible with this mod. There have also been one or two reports that it affected fuel mileage. Impossible because it is METERED air that is bled off the intake AFTER the MAF, so the engine still knows how much air it is getting. That fact alone is enough to dispel both potential problems. The engine is still getting only metered air, so performance cannot be affected at all.
My theory is that those people touched something else that affected their performance. Nudged a plug wire that may have gotten nicked on the sharp edge of the UIM, cracked a plastic vac tube or elbow on top of the UIM, or a crack/leak developed in the accordian tube intake bellows. The throttle hang mod is also commonly used on E30 BMWs without issue.
Which reminds me, I've gotta pull the BMW outa mothballs and get her in to sellable shape...
EDIT:
One last note to add to the site knowledge. Demon mentioned an exhaust volume/harshness difference if you gut precats. In BOTH cases on my non-SVT V-6 cars, I got almost NO difference in sound. This second time I had an SVT exhaust on the car, so if there is a difference it may be due to the higher compression and/or cam timing of the SVT engine.

I don't see how the TH fix can do anything to performance either, but once I do it, I'll be sure to post if it does seem to hurt performance.

I can't wait for the snow to go away so I can get to work on my car again. I am going to try and get the ypipe off, and at LEAST gut the easy side, and try my best to gut the other side. At least I won't need the mils. So, you gutted them and you couldn't tell the difference after you did it? That was the main reason why I haven't done it yet....I didn't want it to sound like a snowmachine on crank.

If you don't have them yet, you WILL need mils if you gut the pre-cats. Don't touch the pre-cats unless you're having a problem 'cause there is no real gain from it.
If you want a gain, buy MSDS headers for $200 plus shipping & call it a day.

you going to install the headers on the car? LOL! I thought 95's didn't need to have mils. The car does have 170K on it and the main cat did get clogged this past summer...so I can only imagine what the precats look like.

Ah, you have a '95. I didn't notice that, so I don't know if you'll need mils or not. I'm not familiar with the setup on the '95 cars.

I dont have a main cat on my car and a "custom" y-pipe (i say that because i honestly have no clue where it came from i just know its not stock). without having driven it before these mods i dont know if the power increased... the car is louder than a stock SVT now but it does rasp untill it warms up a bit (less than a minute of driving)

If this is possible through "Marty," could someone please direct us to his website/info/#? I'm in TX and don't need the protective coating, so that's a bargain in my book.
