instead of porting the cylinder heads on an oval port motor to match the lower intake, why not port the top of the lower intake to match a dual port upper?? Or do the bolt holes not line up? I'm trying to get around using a 3L upper without going hybrid, yet still have stock waterpump placement. thanks ,Derek

Can't port the 3L lower enough to fit because the 3L lower intake is plastic, and it has a smaller cross sectional area than the split port manifolds. The oval port heads have a larger inlet to the heads.
I don't think they are any better than comparably ported split port heads, just cheaper. And of course, they are what are available with a cam driven waterpump.

yeah when I did my 95 I did most everything possible, but this is for a firend and is a daily driver that he wants to able to drive on 87 octane if need be, so I'd prefer to stick with hte stock 3L heads for lower compression. grumble looks like i'm using a 3L upper then.
