I just took my car in for an oil change. I had them use Mobil 1 Syn as usual, but I think they may have put in 10w-30 and not 5w-30. I searched and found a thread that recommended that you didn't go any higher than five, and if you used anything other than 5w-30 you should be using 0w-40.

Alright, so here's my question is my car alright to drive for the next 3k-5k miles, or do I need to go back and get them to put in 5w-30?

From what I've read, oil weight, in a general sense, correlate with the ambient air tempature your car is operated in. So its still pretty hot here in Dallas, and will get a little cooler this fall. Just wanted to throw this info out there if you guys needed it.

It is cold weather and 10w30 that these engines hate. I would not worry about it unless you intend a trip to a skiing resort before the next oil change. 5w30 is better, so go back to it on the next oil change. In the long run you will be better off, but an ocassional change of heavier oil shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for easing my fears big Jim. I should be due for another oil change by November. So it shouldn't get too cold before I switch back.

Where did you take it that they can't read the 5-30 on the oil cap????

I'd check your reciept and if they did find someone else to do your oil changes from now on...

Your oil cap says 5-30?? Mine just says engine oil...

I don't see any reason why they would've put in 10w-30 though... it just doesn't make sense...
