You're thinking of cell phones. If I shut down service completely on the home phone there's no dial tone at all - no way to call 911. Plus, the right way to do a VOIP install is to unplug the home telephone network from the telco where it comes into the house and plug the VOIP adapter into the home phone wiring at any jack - then you can use any phone in the house just as though it were connected to the telco.
I read Vonage's FAQ on 911 calling - says you still need to be able to tell the PSAP operator location and nature of emergency - I don't trust my 4-year-old to do that if I'm unconcious.

Last months bill was the largest I've seen. 250 minutes over my plan(I have a teenager) and with all fees and tax included it was $24 and change. One of my favorite features is that you get email notification when you have a voice mail and you can set it up so that you get the voice mail audio attached to the email. I'm saving $20 to $25 a month over my old service. Granted, the audio quality does have some skips and bumps once in awhile but otherwise the service is great!

If you disconnect your house line from the telco box outside, you can plug your Vonage box into any phone jack in the house, and the rest of the jacks will have the Vonage dial tone.

So i have had Vonage now for over a month and i would have to say i love it. The quality over the landline is awesome and is second to known. I am recommending it to everyone, not just vonage but any kind of VoIP service on the net. I pay 27 dollars a month for unlimited local and long distance calls to the us and canada. DO IT, it will be the best thing you do for your home and your budget you could ever do.

Think I'll check this out. Tired of Ma Bell ass raping me every month.
Can you run DSL through Vonage?
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I don't think so since your VOIP runs over the internet connection. In order to have DSL you would still need the phone connection. You would still need Ma Bell. Doesn't your cable company offer broadband?

Yes, but I plan to dump those butt munchers for satellite. Remember hurricane Frances back in 2004? All of my utilities were torn off my house when one of my trees came down. They still have not come to put my cable back up, but the work order is out there. I finally had to do it myself after nearly 4 months.
IF they ever show, they'll have to run a new cable line to the pole because I just spliced in a length my own cable to get it running. Eventually, they'll come by to fix it for the next person who owns this house.

You have to have an upload of more then 90 kpbs, anything lower then that and you will notice some quality issues. If i don't do anything on the internet such as download or open up websites i'm good to go, but once i start to do either the conversation goes choppy and doesn't stop until you stop with whatever you are doing. So if you go with something more like 512 download then i dont' think you will really have a problem. i have a 256/128 connection. hope this helps you. Vonage connection tester, works best with nothing running.

There ARE providers that offer what is considered 'naked DSL', which is DSL minus a dial-tone. But, Vonage (or any other VoIP service) will work over any broadband connection.
