Don't forget to check your clutch safety switch. The symptoms that you listed were the same when my switch crapped out. Easier than taking the starter out!

I'm having a similar problem right now. The car starts fine if jumped but otherwise will not start. Battery seems to be fine, as all dash lights, radio, etc. work fine. I'm guessing it's either the starter or the alternator. Sitting at the dealership right now. My last payment on the car is May 1st and I knew I wasn't going to glide into that day.

Ended up being the battery.

Well, it took me a while to find time to mess with the car. I've tried cleaning the IAC valve as per one suggestion, didn't help. The car would not even roll start, so I wound up towing it to a nearby dealer for diagnosing. They said it was a PATS problem after all. Apparently the main ecu lost touch with reality (or at least the keys). They couldn't give a good explanation why it occured.

Unfortunately they cannot reprogram it - they said the PATS system has them completely locked out. Consequently, they said they have to replace the ECU then program the new one to the car. To do all of this will cost just shy of $1200. Since the car is out of warrantee (54K miles on it) and 6 years old, it would appear that Ford won't lift a finger to help offset the cost either.

So I brought the car home, parked it next to the garage and threw the cover over it. It'll have to stay there till I can afford to fix it or figure out an alternative...

Check the warranty manual in you glove box. It came with the owners manual. I think you will find that the PCM is covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first under the federal emissions warranty. You might want to remind them of that. I shouldn't matter that it is not for a emissions problem.

That's great news - I'll check that ASAP!

I checked the manual, and yes it confirms what you said. It specifically stated that the PCM is covered 8/80K. Is there any reason that the deal could or would not honor that? The car is all stock except the KKM and a different resonator...

The only reason that I can think of is that they may have been focused elsewhere other than on an emissions component.

I guess I was wondering more along the lines of if the PCM had to be replaced because of a PATS issue rather then an emissions problem, if the 8/80K still applied or if the dealer could say "sorry, but it didn't fail because of an emissions problem, so the gov'ts emissions warrantee doesn't count"...
