My stock tach needle jerks up and down instead of the smooth sweep it normally has - even when cruising it can jerk a few hundred RPM either way. Any ideas out there?

you have indiglo gauage? I have them, and the needle would hit the gauges. I pried it up a bit with a spoon, doesn't hit anymore and moves smoothly now.

A whack on top of dash, while crude, is sometimes effective in cases more severe than your's where swings are in the 1000s and/or speedo is doing the same thing. Otherwise, you must look for needle in haystack (assuming it's an intermittent poor electrical connection in dash).
