I could not find a good site technical site to find the answers to this question, I am sure they are out there though.

My question is this, If you take a digital picture at the size of 1280X960 and then resize it to 680X480 does that effect the picture resolution at all? Or if you take it at 640X480 and resize it to 1280X960 does this change the resolution?

I am just trying to figure out if it is better to just take all the pictures at 1280X960 to keep the 'best' resolution possible and just make the ones smaller that I need to for various applications.

Thanks.

Not really sure what you are asking, but hope this helps...

If you take a picture at 1280X960 and you resize the picture to 640x480, then you WILL NOT loose quality.

Yeah, basically if you increase the size of a smaller res pic it will get all grainy. I take all of mine on the highest res then shrink them down if I need to.

I'm not sure about the answer, but I'll take a stab at what he's asking.

Using the camera settings, is there a difference between taking a pic at 1280x960 and taking one at 640x480, using the same camera if they both end up at the 640x480 size?

I really don't know. I don't take them at 640x480 because one day I just might want a bigger picture.

No, only the fact that you cannot blow the pic up without resolution problems. Take them in the highest resolution of you have the space. I only use the largest settings.

Exactly. I would be so pissed if I took the most amazing picture ever and it was only 800x600. Unless you're taking pictures of things for auctions or inventories or something where it doesn't matter, then you should leave the settings at the largest picture size and least compression.

If you ever want to get prints made, a small file will look crappy.

Here's an example:

519x312

The same file blown up to 1280x769
