SleeperZ/CTA Mix
#1225516 - 04/26/06 08:57 PM

I mixed my CTA (well just the pipe) with a sleeperZ type setup. With my own little twist. Like spectra 28inch air inlet tube, which keeps it bends and doesn't look too bad...

Took out fender baffle and ran spectra tube out threw the factory whole because you can crush this stuff if you want too. Worked out pretty good I guess.

Not bad, but the problem with our zetecs is that they need the plenum over the TB. When the TB draws air, it sucks from the plenum and not from the air box.

Where did you find the tube? Thats a clever way to use the stock air box like that.

Figures that thing had function lol I thought it was more for sound controll. But seems the baffle in the fender does more in that department.

I purchased the tube from autozone. It can expand to 28inchs, cuts very easy, and can be bent to any shape and pretty much holds it.

The setup does seem to be working better than the shortram. Might put the box back on the TB, it's been 6 years but it's around somewhere lol

Nice setup, but like Kerry2Kool4U said, you should throw your plenum back on.

That valve cover filter is pretty slick. Where did you get it?

Plenum info...

Its not so much a power thing, but will benefit throttle response.

To add to SleeperZ's response...

It helps throttle response and idle smoothness. From what I've read, Ford couldn't make the intake manifold big enough. When you nail the throttle the engine tries to pull in as much air as possible to fill the cylinders. When you just have a 3" pipe mounted to the top of the throttle body, it doesn't hold enough air to completely fill the cylinders. With the plenum box, it adds a ton of volume to the intake. When you nail the throttle all of the air in the plenum is instantly sucked out. The engine doesn't have to pull it through a little 3" pipe. It has a big-ass 16"x8"x6" box full of air ready to go.

The idle smoothness comes from the plenum box softening the IAC valve's pulses. If you just have a small pipe the pulses go back through the intake piping to the MAF. The MAF senses the air going in reverse and it leans things out. All causing lumpy idle.

I hope that makes sense.

Found the box, but can't find the damn bolts that hold it to the TB... Dealer time I guess, or junkyard.

The breather is a specta (my wife threw the box away, I'm pretty sure it's specta) sold at autozone or advanced autoparts. The rubber connector that is on it to start has a really small hole that wouldn't fit over the valve cover port... So I pulled it out of the breather (is just a rubber piece that pops into it), and discovered that the hose that runs to the airbox from the valve cover (which was soft and shot in the middle anyway) fit perfect into the openning on the breather with a litte snug feeling so it's not going anywhere. Just cut a piece of the hose and it seem to work out good.

So I guess the only gain in my intake track is the fact I took out the baffle in the fender and ran that tube. Does K&N make a highflow filter that fits the factory box?

I managed to loose one...how I have no idea...but... I found a long allen bolt at my local Ace Hardware. It was the perfect length too.

Do they have Ace Hardware in Rhode Island?

Yup we have em I'll check it out. Ummm whats the chance you have thread count per inch, over all length. But no problem if not, I'll pick up some to see which one is right.

I went out to ACE and found 1/4x20 long bolts. I had to tap the thread on the TB to the 1/4x20 SAE I think the threads where 6mx1. But after doing that little bit of work they threaded right in. I now have the plenum box back on, which does seem to make it better (took away that mean sound though) but whats a mean sound if the car can't go fast anyway lol
