Water pump question?

I was wondering if my 1998 4 cylinder Zetec has the same water pump problem as the V6 engine? I have read alot about the V6 and have not seen much about the 4 cylinder. If there is the same problem where can I find instructions on how to change it? And is it a very difficult job?

It doesn't seem to be much of a problem on the zetecs. Of course, anything can happen, but we rarely hear of a zetec water pump going bad. When it does, it's a pain to get to. You have to remove a lot of 'stuff' on the passenger side of the engine to get to the pump.

I don't think they have the same type of tendency to fail, although I could be wrong. It's pretty easy to change your water pump though, and you can do a coolant flush while you're at it if you want to. Alot of times people change it when they do their timing belt because you're in there and it's convenient. Escpecially on the earlier contours where the wp was run by the timing belt. -Peter

There was a recall on some of the zetec 98 water pumps. Mine went at 40k if your over that I'm sure it will be ok, they make a wierd hollowing noise when they do go.
Some of them the pump is under the timing cover, mine is a pre 98 and it's not under the cover. It's off to the right of the cover, and can be removed without doing a timing job. It's a small space to get into but if you remove the pass. motor mount it's not too bad (you need to support the engine)

I have almost 47K on my car. And everything sounds real good to this day. Hopefully it holds up. Do you know where I can find out about the recall for the water pumps? I just recently purchased this car from an 87 year old women that put only 700 miles on it since 2002 and I am trying to take care of a couple little problems and trying to prevent any major problems.:D

Sorry to say the recall was only for a short time. I don't know why they had a cut off but they did. I wouldn't replace it until it's bad (when it goes bad it will still sorta work but will have that wierd hollow noise.
If you have to take it in for that it will be about 250-300 dollars depending.
