Repair Bill: $4,500
#477141 - 12/10/03 03:31 PM

Blown Water Pump: $250 Blown Head Gasket: $567 Cracked Engine Block: $4,500... might as well be 'Priceless'
At this point, I can't do much but laugh at it all. $4,500 to replace a Zetec motor -- double what the car is even worth.
Extended Warranty company is trying to avoid paying for it, so I might get stuck with the bill, although I will attempt the legal system if I have to. They do not dispute the water pump failure nor their responsibility to pay, but they are attempting to get out of paying for the other damage, even while the warranty states that they will pay for "any damage that occurs as a result of the failure of a covered component".
They are going to try to write it off as my fault; saying I didn't turn off the car fast enough. Kinda hard to do when you're stuck between construction barricades on a major interstate.
Anyways wish me luck. And, if not, anyone want to buy a '97 Contour parts car? Or maybe even a mechanically inclined individual want to install a 3.0L for fun - I'll pay for the parts. I'm sur eit would be less than the $4,500 that CarMax is claiming it costs to replace a Zetec.

Because I still owe almost $6,000 on the one that blew up. I haven't had it very long at all. So if the warranty company doesn't cover it, I'm stuck with a $150/month payment for almost 4 years. And a bill for several hundred just to diagnose the entire problem.

Do not let the warranty company screw you. Get a lawyer and get them to pay for the repairs. You can also take them to small claims court. They have a contract with you that explicitly says the damage to your car is covered under the terms. I don't see how you could lose. Also tell them you turned off the car as soon as you noticed something was wrong. Saying anything else will give them weapons to use in court against you. You might also be able to bargain with them and have them put a used engine in there for like half the price of your estimate. This might look really appealing to them if they realize you are serious about taking them to court. It will also save you the hassle of going to court and you willl probably get your car back faster.

Fock man! You can get a relatively low mileage Zetec engine for $500...shouldnt cost anymore than another $1000 to install it...

I have had to do the same thing in reguards to replacing my engine. I went to google and did a search and found one for $650 with 24,000 miles on it from Michigan. They were only going to charge me another $75 in shipping. I would look into this if all else fails. I would never spend another $4500 on a car you still owe $6000 for. Just some helpful hints. Good luck...MIKE D

Well, after a lot of going round-n-round, the warranty company has said they will cover it. My out-of-pocket expenses will total $129 for deductible and towing.
$129 for a new Zetec. Can't complain about that.
