Ticking crank pulley
#1227314 - 04/28/06 01:03 PM

What does it involve to take off my crank pulley. I was driving home yesterday and it started to tick a little, and then progressively got WAY worse. How involved is it, and what tools do i need?

Justin

If you have a MTX it will be easier. This is what you will have to do off the top of my head.

Safely raise the front of the tour (jackstands, never use the factory jack to hold the car)

Remove the passenger wheel. Remove splash sheild.

Mark the direction of your drive belt. You might need a helper but uses a 15mm wrench come from the top and pull the tension off the drive belt, have you helper pull the belt off the crank pully. Tensioner tool will help also.

With that out of the way, now it time to take on the pully bolt. you need a 18mm 1/2 drive socket (use a 6point not a 12point, 12point will round a bolt np) you will need a 1/2 drive breaker bar.

Now for ATX or MTX, if you have the MTX you can have a helper push on the brake while the car is in 1st gear, and you should have no problem turning that bolt. Well could spray it down first with PB or WD40 to help out a bit.

ATX you will be faced with either removing the starter and putting prybar in flywheel. Or, my 1998 contour GL 2.0L (not sure if this applies to all years), I found on mine under the car (from front going back past oil pan) The engine to xmission bell housing has a rubber plug looking thing kinda like a big triangle looking.... thing... anyway I remove that and put a prybar on one of the flywheel bolts (hey maybe that area is called the flywheel inspection port lol)

After you get the bolt out, the pully should slide off. But sometimes things don't always go as it should so be ready with a correct pully puller.

you dont need to jam anything on the atx mine came right off with a airrachet right away. then just pull the pulley off.

Sounds good, but what if the engine rotates backwards with the ratchet instead of the bolt letting go. I thought thats bad for a engine to rotate reverse of normal rotation... Then again if he doesn't have airtools (109 for a compressor) and (50 for a cheap airtool set) but they r good to have,I just picked up a 4hp 20gal compressor for 50 bucks has alot more balls then the 2.5hp 8gal which I get ahead of with the ratchet.

Thanks guys. I replaced the crank pulley, and it seemed fine. Today it went back to its damn ticking again, any ideas? Could it be the crank pulley still? Its the exact same tick, in the exact same spot.

Is it an aftermarket pully? Or OEM? Maybe the lower timing cover it's hitting.

ZetecGL has a really good point there, didn't even think off that. All it would take is the metal cord in the belt to be flying around to cause that sound. Timing job is fun

If its the timing belt slap noise, its hiting the timing belt cover, thus the noise you hear. You have 2 options. One, remove it and let it run without the cover or, two, go to a Ford dealership and have them replace it with a larger one(this is what I did).

If the noise sounds like a sewing machine ticking, it is coming from the mechnical valves. But this is with older zetecs so that may not be the problem.

going from his post in troubleshooting section he has an SVT. Either that or he has a zetec contour and a SVT.
