when do we replace our radiator hoses?

This article from Gates suggest ways to test the hoses. And they recommend every 4 years (but they are of course trying to sell more).

I'm interested in the answer to this one.

I asked a mechanic friend of mine about these hoses. He said "Those are silicone hoses. You don't want to change them out unless they are punctured because they are expensive and rarely fail. Most likely the replacements would be inferior and fail even before the originals would."

It is for this reason (and the fact that reaching the lower hose is a major PITA) that I left mine alone.

At 130K, I have had no issues, and just the other day when working with the lower hose where it connects to the water pump inlet(doing a water pump change), I was amazed at how pliable and durable the hose felt. It did feel a little bit more dried out where it leads from the lower hose up to the overflow tank, but then again, the lower hose also felt a little dry until after I had handled it quite a bit. I think the layers of road grime make it feel less pliable than it really is.
