zetec rough on part throttle
#590619 - 04/17/04 12:31 AM

hey,

my 94 Mondeo with teh teeny 1,6 Zetec 4 has a problem with part throttle conditions lately. whenever only part throttle is applied, especially in between 2k and 3500 rpm, itīs hella rough, mainly in 2nd and occasionally in 3rd gear. itīs not a biggie, just annoying, so i was wondering if any of you out there has had the same problem or a suggestion what to look for. i have spark plugs and an air filter with 20.ooo miles on it, otherwise most of the stuff has been on the car since new (140.000 mls).

oh, maybe this is of interest, the car has had stalling issues for 40 or 50.000 miles when cold, but after the first mile or so it runs smooth.

any help would be highly appreciated, especially since pulling codes didnīt help (a Sunn motortester didnīt provide any results and the local MoFoCo dealers donīt have a diagnostic tool for cars this old anymore...)

thanks, clemens

They don't have diagnostic tools for a mid-90s car??? Glad to see ford dealers suck in all countries not just the US. Anyways, plug wires, fuel filter, pcv valve, and ignition coil are a few things to start with. Also check the plugs to make sure they're still good and gapped properly. I would then look for a vacuum/exhaust/intake leak after doing those things.

That is just plain sad.

If you've never done the fuel filter, that would be the first thing to do. It's cheap and easy.

I would also check the MAF. It sounds like it is having trouble determining how much air is coming into the engine. Also, the MAF must maintain a constant temperature to work properly. That would expalin why cold weather is affecting it.

I have also had a problem with the intake manifold gasket on my car. It caused it to idle extremely rough. It would run OK once I got moving.

yup, the MAF was one of the things I was already considering... i tried to clean it last summer but it didnīt have any effects on the cold start stalling symptoms.

and the fuel filter surely is a good idea, wondering why i didnīt think of it myself.

does anyone know how much a MAF and fuel filter would be? guess it has 2 fuel filters, one aftr the pump and one close to the injectors, right?

i think iīll go with those things, and if it still doesnīt help iīll follow kermitīs suggestions, though maybe by then iīd be looking for a cheap parts car... i still have 60.000 miles to go to break the 200.000 barrier, so i might need some parts along the way anyhow...

I don't know about the Mondeo, but my '96 only has one fuel filter. It is right next to the gas tank, behind the passenger rear wheel.

The fuel filter is $7 for generic, and $12 for premium.

The MAF for my '96 was $151 from fordpartsonline.

You can try cleaning your MAF with some electrical contact cleaner and some ultra soft pipe cleaners. If you can afford it, and are planning on keeping the car, I would replace it.
