1996 Ford Contour, Trouble Starting

Hi there, new to the forum. I have a 1996 V6 Contour, 2.5L, auto. Every now and then when I try and start the car I get a loud 'squealing' sound. Usually if you turn the key to 'off' and try it again the car will start. I've been told it's a 'solenoid', or 'relay'. Any ideas. I can get a starter for $50, just not sure that's the trouble. It's the first Ford I've ever had, so ANY info would be great.

Sounds like a bad starter.
