ball joints - where to get from ?

Hi,
I'm gonna replace the ball joints and the dealer told me that they don't carry them separately, only with the control arm.
Called BAT, they're out of them. Any good place to get them ?
Thanks,
Tiv

O'Reilly autoparts (are they in your area). They are bolt ons, your stocks are riveted on so the shop will have to cut the rivets off.
Moog makes good parts (again from O'Reilly)

If I hadn't needed it that day, I'd have called him up.

I just bought one yesterday at a Napa store for $18. I damaged the boot while changing the wheel bearing but they don't carry vehicle specific boots. At the time I thought changing the lower ball joint won't hurt so I bought it instead of a universal boot Then I found out it's riveted and since the ball is still good I'd rather not cut the rivet and replace it with 3 bolts so I only used the boot. $18 for a boot and it didn't even fit well . Anyone want to buy a new ball joint less the boot?

holy cow, $38.88! Napa was $18. But it was "Falcon Steering" made in Taiwan (hey, I was made in Taiwan) and felt too tight for a ball joint. I'm sure it'll loosen up once it's installed. Overall I didn't trust it over the original which is another reason I didn't cut the rivets. Where is the TRW made?

I got a Moog for about $40, IIRC (Autozone?). Has a grease fitting and lifetime guarantee. Had to drill out rivets of old unit, which wasn't too difficult to do. Only time consuming.

So is there any danger in replacing the rivets with bolts? Nut loosening over time, etc?

I work for Ford....we use nuts and bolts to replace rivets at work all the time. When we have a bad rivet we drill it out and put a bolt in there.

No problem at all! As a matter of fact even Corvettes have rivited ball joints that have to be drilled out. The replacements even come with the nuts and bolts. It's more common than you may think.
