Smoking
#791934 - 12/13/04 03:26 PM

Not to bash anyone on here but when I went to my first meet I could not believe all the peeps who smoked. It just really suprised me. For one I am not a smoker and do not plan to be. How many of us do not smoke besides me?? Also when did the smokers first start smoking?
Just curious

I tried pot man and boy i am not going to smoke anything again. I do have a funny story though. I know someone (used to be friends with til he stole my friends subs) who smokes pot. He came over and i had some cat nip laying around. I told em it was pot and he was like dude it smells ummm minty. Im like common its legit i got it from a huge dealer. So he got out a pop bottle and smoked 3 bowls of the cat nip. The whole time i was laughing my ass off. Then to top it after wards he was like man im hungary. What a dumb ass

25% of the Ameican public smoke, so thats 1-in-4.

When you start to factor in lower socioeconomic status and the other attributes, a particluar group could be higher. No idea why a bunch of Contour owners would be more apt to smoke than other segments tho!

Now at our last Nor-Cal CEG meet we had 9-members and no-one smoked.

Oh, and I used to smoke and still enjoy the casual smoke here and there but I havent bought a pack since my last trip to the Reno casinos. Started at 17 after basic while in the Army.

Maybe I could sell drugs and make momey that way...naw... but if anyone needs computer repairs give me a shout! wow did that wander. Don't start. It's not good for you. None of it.

Having said that, I usually partake in 4-5 cigars a month. I'll burn before I give them up. Life would suck without the occasional Avo or Davidoff. Label me a hypocrite; I've been called worse.

No nicotine teeth for me, either. I'm on the Tom Cruise dental plan at work, so my pearlies are mirrors...

If you guys could only see the lungs that I've seen in some of the gross anatomy books I've read. Smoking is a tough habit to kick, but in my opinion, the pros of not smoking outweight the cons, hence why I've never touched a cig.

I don't smoke, and I've never tried pot () even though my mom was heavy into it. I don't have a problem with others smoking pot (I've been offered, actually begged on a few occasions), but I'm not gonna do it.

I tried smoking when I was like 10, but gave up. I can't stand how people smell after smoking! A girl that smokes is a HUGE turn off for me, even if she's the hottest chick around. Now I'm not sayin I wouldn't hit it, but NO WAY I could live with her.

Definatly NO smoking in this dudes cars.

i stopped cold turkey back in 95 or 96(?) after smoking for about 6-7 years.

its funny. seems like hardly anyone smokes around here anymore. everyone knows its BAD for you, its expensive, and its very in LA w/ all the health wannabees. i do still the young 20 somethings doing it the most though. the ones that go to clubs and bars a lot.

as much as i enjoyed the feeling when i did it, i cant believe that i voluntarily put something so awful into my mouth. i felt a HUGE difference in my lungs and endurance when i finally did quit. i remember when i first realized when i should quit. i started to learn how snowboard and every time i fell down i would gasp for air while struggling to get back up. i wasnt used to rigorous activity (for many years) and did nt know that it was realllly affecting me. i cant believe there are people, like my wife, who have NEVER even tried it. it seems like everyone has tried a puff at least once in their lives. but not everyone i guess...

both of my grandfathers died from lung cancer. both were smokers, one a HEAVY chain smoker. its not a controversial argument. everyone, except big tobacco, agrees that it WILL kill you. its just up to you if you really want to do it.

Just an FYI:
I hear the nicotine supplements (patch, gum, etc) help the quit rate by 50%. They're expensive, but if you're ready and willing, it sure sounds like they can help.
And no, you probably can't get a buzz from them. They're supposed to be set below the buzz threshold.

I smoked from the time I was 14 till I was 29. Smoking is very addictive. It's unbelievable how hard it is to quit.

There are people out there who hate cigarette smoke. I've been into a few fights because people tried to put my cigarette out.

that's crazy but ive heard of heated arguments over it. and cellphones too if you can believe it.

i know smoking is addicting. i tried to quit a few times but i didnt REALLY try till the last time. i didnt get any cravings even though i smoked about a 1/2 a pack a day. after a few days of not smoking i would get a really nasty withdrawl headache.
i do know people who have had a real tough time though and i believed them, it just wasnt hard for me (thank God!) i still like the smell. reminds me of my grandparents home when i was little. i cant STAND the smell of pot, even though I smoked it in high school. blech! didnt like the smell then either.

My moms smokes, only like 1/2 a pack a day but all my life it pissed me off. My clothes would smell like stale cigs no matter what I did. I hated it all through high school because she started smoking the cheapest cigs that smelled stale before she smoked them. I on the other hand smoke cigars and a pipe. I tried hash twice in Germany but didn't like it. The thing that sucks here in Europe is everyone smoke and whenever I go out my clothes smell like smoke. I don't mind it so much anymore, just that all my stuff smells. I have no problems with smokers as long as when I go home I can be away from the smoke, thank God I moved out of my moms place!

That's some amazing insight. Anyways. I started smoking when I was 14. I started quiting at age 17...didn't really QUIT til well now. I'm 20 and it has been about an honest year since I have had the desire to have one. I had one cig in august, that is the last and only time that I can remember (04).

Quit if you can. I am able to run, work out, play sports, and overall I feel 50x healthier.

If you want to smoke I won't hold it against you tho.

You know what? Addictions are diseases. If someone wants to quit, you offer help and don't spit on their shoes.

Why don't you just paint a target on your back! Most people make stupid statements from time to time in their lives and I let them slid but you do it with such consistency that it's no wonder you have people jumpin your shizt all the time!

Back on topic I started when I was 16 and quit at 41. It'll be a year in 4 days! I'm also a recovering alcoholic(7years) and that was easier then quitting smoking. I disagree that addiction is a disease. I think that a crutch and an excuse for failure.

Addiction has never been seen as a disease in the clinical world; rather it's a psychological issue.

Anyways, congratulations on the one year anniversary, that's great!

I may be a bit old-fashioned in my analysis, but I believe that you pick up a lot of habits from monitoring the world around you when you were young. I have seen that a lot of my friends whom smoke, have regular interactions with smokers in their family. Of course this is just an observation, and not a statement. However, when you pick up the habit at a young age, you fail to see the severity of it, until later, which could be far down the road, when it may be too late.

Both my parents smoked. What they called them was "ickies" like it was something bad, because they are. They always made sure I knew they were bad that way and even now that still has more of an effect on me over all the evidence that its bad. I don't not smoke because its bad for me rather because I don't feel right when I do.

that's true to an extent. a lot of people don't even have health insurance and get minimal treatment, if any, when theyre close to death. and that's through medicare and what not. that's where the state picks up the tab. hence all the lawsuits of states vs. big tobacky. PLUS, health insurance companies are dicks for terminal illnesses. they typically will only cover up to a point and then cut people off. some people sue but its like David and Goliath when suing a company that big.
this info may be off a little but in the end, as you said, it costs us in the long run. who's fault is it? i dunno. people who continue to smoke? (though may be addicted) Big tobacco who legally puts addiction-causing additives in the mix? the govt for not "intervening" enough?
hopefully, one day they will just tax the sh*t out of smokes so much that people will just plain refuse to pay that much. i have heard of quite a few people who have quit based on how much its gone up since i was in high school. they sure are happy about it now though.
i dont blame anyone who continues to do so though. its a personal choice and some people enjoy it. if youre trying to get off it, then more power to you and i wish you good luck.
just remember: dont they say that each pack smoked is like taking off a year of your life? or something like that? thats scary. i smoked A LOT of packs back in the day.

I REALLY feel for alchoholics though. my unle was one. its terrible. im so glad i dont like alchohol that much cuz they say it runs in the family.
congrats on your quitting both of your bad habits RT.

btw smoking pot and cigars can give you cancer too but im sure everyone already knows this.

And I understand that but addiction problems are generally speaking psychological in nature(and treated with talk therapy) and when you tell someone they have a "disease" to me that absolves the addict of any personal responsibility for their problem and when and if they relapse they think "what can I do, I have a disease". All addicts are ducking responsibility in some form so my theory is to not give them another excuse to continue that behavior. I'm not trying to be a hardazz and I'm not a trained professional it's just my opinion.

I'm a smoker (no dope), have been since I was a kid. Parents were smokers so it's assumable that desensitized me to how nasty a habit it can be. Yep, want to quit but like any other 'habit', imo, you need to be really fed up with it before being successful. Dabbled at quitting a year ago (first time ever), had bouts of being dizzy etc.

Hope to quit in the next 8 mos or so. As I am a bit of an organization and tidy freak, am letting the ashtrays pile up around the house ~ ewwwwwww!!

BTW, no smoking in MY car for me or anyone else!!

Every time I see a kid light up, just want to smack them senseless. Guess hindsight is 20/20.

And why? Would you try some crack if someone gave it to you? Do you think you actually look cool with a nicotine stick in your mouth?

And look at that Todd missed the point.

Actually I bought myself a Hookah yesterday. I used to smoke rollies when I worked in the mines, then switched to regular cigarettes and have dipped recently.

The Hookah and Shisha method of smoking is weird. The smoke smells good, doesn't contain any tar or weird sh!t like regular cigarettes and only has 0.5% nicotine. When I tried it out yesterday it was almost like not smoking at all as it smelled awesome, was cool - not hot like a regular draw on a cig and when you exhale it disppates and leaves nothing. My house had no layer of smoke hanging around the ceiling it actually was better than incense because the tambak (tobacco) is flavoured with fruit and molasses. And it WAS fun. A buddy and I smoked for 2 hours and when I was done I didn't feel like ass like after smoking a cig. No bad aftertaste or shortness of breath.

I'm not sayig this is a healthy past-time, bit for a bit of relaxation now and then it's really fun!

My grandpa smoked for 30 years, and has had normal cholestoral levels for all of those years, and still suffered a massive heart-attack about 4 years ago. With a miracle, he's still alive today, still smokes maybe 4 ciggarettes a day. Just goes to show you how strong of an addiction ciggarettes really are.

Yeah I have two jobs [censored]. I'm only 17, 18 next week though. Anyways I work more than some of the people on here do and I go to school full time. I worked a total of 17 hours on Sunday, could you even handle that much work in a week.

I would like to talk more but have to leave for work now that I look at the time.

Don't exclude the salad and count the parfait with the granola too. You'll be a fatty boombah in no time eating anything from there. I love the hypocrisy. So socially responsible that he can complain about his tax money (which incidentally he receives all but his FICA back because he is in school and is certainly not making enough to get into a real tax bracket)going to the health care of smokers while he provides high fat, high cholesterol meals to america. Good job!

Nope the made the salad more fatty than the burgers!

Wait so Hitman your saying you have a problem with the smokers because it raises health care costs? What do you think MickyD's does to health care cost? Obesity is only second to smoking in terms of preventable disease. I know people don't just get fat from eating fast food, but it is a large factor. You work for a company the adds so many addictive agents to their food it's as bad as tobacco companies.

The tobacco taxes are supporting this nations health care system. States are grabbing the fund and using the tax revenue to prop up there budget deficits.

The farmers and companies producing this stuff pay taxes and employ thousands. This is an integral part of the US economy.

In "supersize me" it was stated that in a few years obesity will surpass smoking as the number one cause in heart disease and causes of death. If you watch supersize me, watch the extra's on how they tested the food for longevity.

Amen to that. But I think on my 18th birthday, im going to buy a pack, just for the hell of it. Then give it away to someone.

And why? Would you try some crack if someone gave it to you? Do you think you actually look cool with a nicotine stick in your mouth?

And look at that Todd missed the point.

I did huh? Please explain what I missed. Words are right there.

its more of a sense of leaving childhood, being able to do something you once never could... It was like when I got my licence, Right after I got it... I went to the car wash, not because my car needed to be washed. But because I had that sense of freedom to get around whenever I wanted... As the same for turning 18, I will have a new sense of freedom, I can legally buy Cigerettes, porno, and be tried as an adult (which I wont be testing the law for obvious reasons). I bet you went for a drive when you got your licence. Or what did you do the day your turned 21? There is a fairly high possibilty you drank some alcohol. Its just the sense of freedom, you dont have to drink on your 21st birthday, but you do (in most cases)... because you can.

Buy a blunt and at least smoke it. If you're buying something just because you can, it's kind of stupid. Would you go and shoot a deer in the woods and leave it there to rot, just because you could? If so your even more stupid then I thought.

Haha, buying a pack of inanimate cigarettes and not smoking them does not compare, in any way, to shooting (and killing) a live animal and letting it rot in the woods. If he wants to spend a couple of dollars, let him...jeeze.

Yes, both actions are futile, but one involves killing a live animal, and the other involves buying a back of cigarettes. They're completely different.

You just can't comapare the two .

Ok I will rephrase, I wrote that very quickly: Your level of education has no bearing on the validity your argument. The fact that someone is 16 and in High School has no bearing on his argument. You can make a valid argument without having a good education. You cannot say and argument is bad because of where it is coming from; it’s the premises that build the argument, not the education. BTW there are lots of people with college educations who don't have a clue, really saying you graduated college means nothing to me unless I have some criteria that suggests that college gave you a good education or any education at all.

Most Cuban cigars suck unless they've been aged properly. It's one of the few cash crops that Cuba has going for them and there has been increasing pressure to get "quantity" pushed over "quality". I've heard that filler aging times have been cut in half with some manufacturers...

For example, a Cohiba needs abother 6-12 months of sitting before you smoke it, minimum.

I've never been a big Cuban fan, so I don't have to worry about this. Dominicans are pretty much the only thing that lines my humidor these days...

Stupid ass 16yr olds need to go to school and get an education before spouting useless garbage. Why you even bother to argue with the mature college educated folk who frequent these boards makes me dizzy. Your opinions only make you look more stupid than you already are.

I shall stand between and behind these two factions.

Eh I used to be someone who had asthma bad, since it's subsided I don't care too often anymore. The only time I need to leave is an enclosed party scene. Then the air gets downright disgusting to breathe (I'm tlaking 20 smokers at one time, that's what gets me).

Wow I can't believe I read through all of that. Few things to say:

1. Smoking stinks. Yuck! I'm very surprised at how many young people still pick up this horrible habit. What are they thinking?

Yeah I have two jobs [censored]. I'm only 17, 18 next week though. Anyways I work more than some of the people on here do and I go to school full time. I worked a total of 17 hours on Sunday, could you even handle that much work in a week.

I would like to talk more but have to leave for work now that I look at the time.

2. I work 17 hours a day everyday usually. 100-120 hours a week I figure, but I don't keep track. And I am a full time college student. The plus side is I work for myself.

I always liked the smell of cigarettes. Cigars too. Pipes I was not find of, but the smell of pipe tobacco varies widely.

Yes, smokers are VERY aware fo how the smoke smell lingers.

I but I don't care.
