Paid too much for trans replacement?

I just got the bill to replace the auto trans on my '96 SE for $3,400. This is for a replacement, not repair of the original. Is this way out of line for the Washington DC area? I have not paid for nor picked up the car yet. This was done at a local Aamco.

$3,400 is a smidge high, but not unusual.

I paid about $2200 last October to replace my CD4E. $1400 for the tranny and about $700 for labor, plus they replaced a broken mount for about $100 parts and labor.
Shop around, especially when you're talking about prices in the thousands of dollars.

If it helps any, shop rates in this area run $90-$100 an hour even for low life cars like Fords and Dodges. I'm hoping that's the reason for the high price tag. I told my wife I bought this car twice, once new and $3,400 used, about $500 more than an '96 SE sells for.

Holy crap! Did you get 2 hookers with that?! Would ease the penetration. Had my entire tranny gone through. Replaced worn items and had a Quaife LSD and Zetec final drive. About $1400 total. This is for an MTX though. Not sure what you have. I'm guessing ATX. So maybe not as bad but still bad. Might not want to ask when the work is finished next time.
