What do you do when you come to a stop sign?
#1106634 - 11/21/05 03:59 PM

When approaching a stop sign, do you put it in the neutral (to glide)? Do you depress the clutch? OR do you down shift? Because for me it doesn't always go into neutral smooth. I live in a highly residental area and I coast through stop signs with it in 2nd, because I have to be totally stoped to get it into 1st. Your thoughts?

I'm sure if you give it a little more time, a nice police officer will tell you that rolling through stop signs in general is not the correct way of going about it. Good luck getting an honest answer.

I generally stop at stop signs, but that might just be me.

sounds to me like someone has a hard time taking off... Its pretty common for contours, not the easiest to drive with a stick, very picky about how you drive them if you want nice and smooth shifts. My tour' is extremely picky on take off's. Basically just watch your clutch work. let it out slowly, figure out the friction point, and hold it there until you have full contact. Generally when I have to stop, pending upon how far away I have to go, I will just push the clutch in, move the shifter to neutral and ease on the brakes, once I get to the stop light/sign, Come to complete stop and put back into 1st. Then I continue on my way once the light changes or it is presumed safe to go.

usually i put it in 5th gear while approaching a stop sign and then dump the clutch immediately upon reaching the sign. when i notice there is no traffic coming, i proceed to start it back up and take off in 3rd. sometimes in reverse.

Thank you for the laugh!

I like to stop, wait 3 ticks (as the people behind me glare), and then go, just like they say you're supposed to, though I like to take off..

Afraid to get too powerful a car and burn rubber on them takeoffs

I slam on my brakes and launch my car on take off. I also flip off the cops if there are any.

I've always thrown mine in neutral and coasted to a stop.
