300mm x 280mm brake upgrade
#1220971 - 04/20/06 08:25 PM

I hope it will be happening in the not so distant future. I've got a Dragon Run coming up in June & would like the brake upgrade available & on my car in May so I can wear things in properly & put a few miles on the kit before hitting the mountain roads.

Is a timeline or progress update available?

Within 15 days I pull the trigger on the new brake kit.

FSVT or the new CEGer conversion....

Talk to Stazi about this if you are still interested. I'm waiting on him to give feedback for the rear kit I sent. I also sent a second front kit out for testing on a stock E0 SVT with stock rims and I'm waiting for the results on that as well. A little more feedback has been necessary to correct some alignment issues on the front kit in that car but still things had been looking good.

Need all the brakes you can get on the Dragon.

What sold me was the fade resistance reported by Demon. The importance of resisting fade was brought home one day as I was descending from Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. I was driving an '88 Grand Marquis with smoking brakes, red hot rotors and no more stopping power. Made a hard right at an uphill turnoff & got the car stopped at a 300' drop with the guard rail 3 inches from my bumper.

You never really know what is meant by sweatin' bullets until a moment like that.

Yea, lol.
It fills up the stock hardware completely and near stock harware pretty well. After going through the measurements on the FSVT wheels I had it ended up that I couldn't keep those rims and still get one of your nice brake kits unless I ended up with just the similar sized 12" rotors with the high dollar calipers. To me it wasn't worth an extra $1000 over FSVT brakes to keep my current rims and get better brakes. So it was either shell out $1800 to convert over to yours, or this.
So economics took over at that point.
For me to have gotten your larger rotors I'd have had to add another $1000 just for an average set of rims and tires. I admit I wasn't about to put in another $3K to the car when just the FSVT upgrade would suffice as I only needed a moderate increase in breaking performance.

Because usually a rotor is 300mm x 15mm (diameter x thickness), where in the title it says 300mm x 280mm...which would make the rotor more like a Flintstone wheel!

Get it!?

Yeah, now I do. I just automatically associated the 280 with the rear, not width as the title has. I couldnt figure out what was wrong. Thanks

Well yea! Flintstone rotors are the best because you never get any brake fade due to all the added mass. You think if they figured it out in the stone age you guys would get it by now....

If I understand this correctly, the brackets for the front will only fit the E1 (smaller) caliper?

War, will I need new (to me) E1 calipers, or calipers and brackets as well to even fit to your adapter?

The reason I ask, is that I have E0 calipers.

TIA

Seeing as all Contour knuckles are identical, I DOUBT that the bracket that is going to be used on the E1 SVT calipers would NEED be different to work on E0 SVT calipers. Hence I think the kit will work for ALL SVT's, E0 and E1.

Im intrested in the completion date as well. The Cougar is almost road worthy and this would fill its OE 17s nicely (along with the FSVT kit).

On a different note, the regular donut spare doesnt fit the 280 mm rotors, does it? People might need/want to look for the SVT spare before there is a side of the road suprise. I recently picked one up for my car and was suprised at how light it was.

I try not to go OT too often... but since someone already mentioned the spare issue. Does anyone know if there's any place that sells aftermarket spares? I'd be interested in a lightweight and/or larger rim spare... but not full size (that's not very light). I probably spent 1/2 a day googling around and couldn't even find alternative spare tires

The FSVT donut's tire might be smaller then the Contour/Cougar spare. If the wheels are the same size, the standard Contour spare tire could possibly fit onto the FSVT wheel. I cant respond with what kind of setup the large brake Cougar came with as my car's previous owner removed it to save weight (maybe to help shave off some of the weight of the bodykit?). I grabbed the CSVT spare just in case either way.

As for finding one, Swazo has one for sale in the classifieds.

Just pulled the trigger on FSVT brakes, so I'll only be interested in the brackets - maybe.

if were talking about the fsvt 300mm rotors then shouldnt the fsvt spare be made to fit the 300mm rotors on that very car? if the csvt spare doesnt fit, the fsvt has got to be the next alternate

Just move a good wheel/tire from the rear and put it onto the front, then put the spare on the rear. Problem solved and it would be smarter to have the full size tire on the drive and/or turning wheels.

As far as the brakes, we just got a second test set installed on the fronts in the last few weeks in order to get independent testing impressions. A few small changes needed to be made to the fronts to improve the fit.

Just FYI, at this time I am ONLY going to work on this if/when Stazi gets his project done and decides there is enough interest to make a go of it. In the meantime, we'll let BigJim finish testing out his fronts and see what kind of feedback he gives in addition to the fitment corrections he recently sent me.

For those of us that have already done the FSVT upgrade on the front, will/are the brackets for the rear available.

Does the 280mm rotor from the CSVT need to be machined thinner to fit the rear caliper or is this not an issue.

OKAY OKAY! I get the point. You guys want these kits. Let me make another trip to my fabricator to see what its gonna cost me to get the cad drawings changed for these updates I got from the real world testing, and a few other details. Then I'll get back to this. At a minimum I'd like to make back the money and time I invested in making this setup.

Probably, but the guys software is specific to the cutting machine and at the time that is where he created them from the design. So the machine can take a true cad drawing and convert, but his is already converted since he punched it in that way and it doesn't convert backward. Whatever, it won't require that much of a change. I just need a reasonable guess as to the amount of kits I need so I can estimate material costs and such.

Welp, put me down for two sets of brackets.

I'll have the FSVT kit (on the way now) installed on one car, but if this will allow me to run the FSVT calipers & rotors without having to use spacers, I'll feel a lot better about that...

Do we have an estimate/ballpark idea of how much the brackets only will cost? $50? $100? $200? I can't even begin to guess, so maybe a rough idea of what they'll cost would get my attention. I know I'd like to do this, but don't want to be 100% in until I have an idea of what I'm getting into with price.

Any further progress as yet? I'm sure the holiday weekend slowed things down a bit, but now that the Dragon Run is over, I ready to get back to modding.

YES! I did go and see the gentleman just today in fact, around 2pm. I had to wait till I was working nights again to get down to the city and talk about the changes. I should have word in a couple of days. That's the good news. The bad news is I have to change to a different style cutting machine to improve the tolerances on the parts in order to eliminate the fitment issue variations I faced on the prototype bracketry. This machine costs more to run and of course in order to validate it and the brackets it spits out, I will have to pay up front for a set or two, test them for fitment AGAIN, then if all goes well arrange a large batch and group-buy to distribute the costs. Not perfect or the best answer but give me a few days.

Also, the good news is that both people running sets of front brakes adapter brackets report excellent improvement in braking and so far no issues once they got everything mounted. The hardware so far has proved to be strong enough and well worth the costs. But don't ask me costs right now till after I get this next set made and tested. Then I'll set up a group buy. Don't anyone ask me anything other than "are we there yet? Are we there yet...." until I put out more information. When I'm ready I'll post all the information.

Okay, the preliminary estimate is too high.
The cost to use the waterjet machine and cut these brackets is so high that it wouldn't be cost effective. I need to tighten up the tolerances when they are produced but I need it to be more precise so there is no fitment issues, or minimal issues later.

The first way I built them that they were cut on a plasma machine and then I drilled them. I don't have precision drilling and in order to do that it costs more $. So I'm going to research getting them cut on a plasma then having the holes drilled and tapped at a machine shop afterwards. Still more expensive but maybe cheaper than the waterjet.

Trust me, YOU DO! It takes a bit of work but when all four wheels are fat and happy, the brake bias is preserved like stock and you will have more brake power than you have traction...meaning you will be hitting ABS more often than you ever would have with stock brakes. And that is with wider tires too!

I'll be calling the guy again today.

Okay, I've found a reasonable estimate for lasercut. I commissioned a single front and rear to be cut so that I can compare them to the brackets that are already in use. If the fit is good then I can get a batch cut.
It will take 5 days or so to get the new prototypes and then at least another few days for one of the people who did prototype testing to swap them out on their car and compare the fit. If all goes well with the fitment and no changes are needed then we'll run it.
The problem is that I have to run off a large amount in order to bring the costs down. I haven't finalized the costs because I still have to compute final machining cost and find an alternate source for one of the parts. When this is done I will get back on and post a price for the fronts, rears, shipping, and timeframe. At that point if everyone is still interested then I will move it to the group-buy forum. When we get it to the group buy forum it will be up to all of you to help get the Cougar guys in on it and let FCO know as well in order to make it happen.
The only thing I can assure you is that they will be significantly less than the FSVT kit (including you buying your own rotors factored in), and that both the front and rear together (with all estimated costs) it will still pull in less than the FSVT kit by itself.

Its been six months of continuous use on three different SVTs across America. The rear kit has been in use on my old car since September of 2005, and another car since January so we are moving towards the one year mark for reliability testing with them. Although some of you are anxious I encourage you to look at the bright side, in that from both winter into summer with the variety of driving types that those seasons can allow, this hardware has perfromed above expectations. Sometimes waiting is good.

My set is still holding on strong. I can't believe the additional force this setup adds. I get used to it, then hop in a buddies SVT and the braking is just. wow. its phenomenal what this does to your stopping ability. SO much firmer!

I just want to add my comments to Ray's. Now that I'm accostomed to the better brake performance from the bigger rotors, I just can't imagine going back to the original size. The difference is significant.

My subjective opinion is that the braking has improved in the neighborhood of 15% to 20%. I have no test data to support it, just my feeling.

And I only have the fronts. I'm really looking forward to getting the rears done too. I know the rears won't make nearly as much difference, but it will sure look better to have something that isn't as wimpy looking as the stock rears.

I don't think people fully understand how adding brake power really compliments any car. I know in my SHO, doing the 96 brake up grade, it was the best money I spent on the car. I'm sure the same is for these cars.

Brakes is the one area of my cars performance that I have REALLY WANTED to improve, but the acceptable alternatives are so expensive ($1000 or more) that I just work on the other things.

These brackets or the FSVT kit are EXACTLY the thing that will get me to take the plunge. OEM durability parts & good pricing.

Based on Warmonger's last post, I'd expect an interest check & rough price next week, or at the latest the week after. The final price & group buy should follow the next day 'cause I'm sure there are CEGers & Cougar owners lining up for these.

Warmonger: I need two full sets for my SE & LS btw.

And just in case it's OK to get the interest check/GB started early....

1. TourDeForce - two full sets of brackets

Did you mean 17"s? Cuz yeah the spokes go in pretty far on them. The 16"s I got look to have good clearance.

Spacers FTW?

Spacers shouldn't be needed. The 17"s have an offset that puts them way out to the fenders but the spokes come back in. Spacers would possibly have them looking funny and rubbing the fender even more. Though they shouldn't be needed for this. I hope. And the 16"s have a similar offset but normal spokes.

Okay, the parts came back in and they look really nicely cut. Only they don't look like the plans I gave them! lol
He's gonna sit down with the operators and figure out what went wrong with the lasercutting from plans to part, and give me a call back in a couple of days.

They've already said they'll work with the stock SVT wheels. You won't NEED to go any larger to make these work. Just incase you were waiting for larger wheels to get in on this.

Be more specific. If the test fitters know what you are working with, they might not have a problem test fitting that wheel, if they have it available. Big Jim is a Ford tech, so there might be a Contour/Mystique/Cougar/Focus with your wheel style, that he could throw on for fitment.

If you're serious, then NO! Your sig says 98.5 SVT, so I assumed 16" SVT wheels at a minimum. I don't even think 14" wheels can fit around the stock SVT brakes. Anyway, just buy the kit, and have them ready for when you order the bigger wheels.

Yes, today I picked up two prototype templates made of thick sheet aluminum to test fit against my original hardware mockup and my drawings.
Bad news is I found two errors on the template for the front, and one for the back. The one for the front plate is a hole spacing issue I need to do some simple calculations to figure out why it is off. Should be easy enough to fix.
The good news is that the other two errors are just small issues with the outline of the brackets and easy to tweak in the software drawing. The rear bracket holes are perfect.
I'll give him the corrections and then he'll redo them. I won't have another estimate till I talk to him again but we are very close now to a final working product.

Assuming you find someone to run these prototypes on their car, right away..... how long will you have them run them, before moving onto a final product? This is, assuming that you are happy with the fitment and performance of the prototype.(In other words, best case scenerio!)

No running them necessary since we have that data already. This is just a test fit to verify that they are being produced correctly, which should make you all happy since it minimizes delays.
If they bolt up good then I'll immediately go to the group buy section and set up the rules I want to play by. I'm not getting caught like I did years ago on those sunroof modules where I invested in a bunch of product only to have people back out.
I still have some other little details to work out about sourcing all the bolts and spacers at hopefully a cheaper rate than I have right now but that won't stop production if I can help it. I won't do that until I know everything else is a 100% go.

Take deposits to cover material costs, or better still, put together the GB with payment in full required up front, then make a production run with little/no risk to you.

Yeah I think I'm going to do this route. Take deposits to alleviate most of the heavy costs so I'm not out a bunch of money.
I called today but the corrected brackets aren't back yet. Still waiting.

Now wouldn't it be a dull world if we sent all the Oakies back to Oakie and all the Arkies back to Arky and all the Hoosiers back to Hoosie. If California can keep some from all the different groups, surely you can keep a few hippies.

Hippies don't fit in very well here anymore either. Berkley has become much more conservative and San Francisco has . . . well, lets just say drifted off some other way. The crunchy group just doesn't fit in much anymore.

I still have some other little details to work out about sourcing all the bolts and spacers at hopefully a cheaper rate than I have right now but that won't stop production if I can help it. I won't do that until I know everything else is a 100% go.

Funny you should ask, I got a call this morning that the new test/proto brackets are read to check out. I couldn't get down there today, long day. I'll have to get down there tomorrow afternoon if everything goes right. I'll do preliminary checks to make sure they aren't obviously F'd up.
If they pass that test then I'll either make a decision to build or to get a test fit.
Let you guys know more tomorrow.

Well I got them and they look pretty good.
The lasercut is decent even though they aren't polished edges, but the method seems consistent, accurate, and should suffice.
It is the consistency that I care about.

I've tested the bolt holes and that all looks pretty good but I face the decision to produce them as is without another test fitting, or to send them out to one of the beta testers and have them testfit just to be sure.
I've bolted them up to my test hub and so far so good there but I don't have any 300mm rotors or calipers any more to check the swept area for the pads.

I personally would be happy with them the way they are because if I did run across a small fitment issue I could fix it...but there will always be one person who starts whining if they aren't perfect right off the bat.

Hence the dillema.
What do you guys want to do?

Send them for a test fit. I don't care who. Be sure before you start knocking them out.

Come to think, ChattavegasSE has an SVT kit on his car now. He might be willing to put his old calipers on those 300mm rotors & give you a comparison as well as a test fit - all super secret, of course.

Just a thought.

If I do that it can't just be anyone as the studs the get pressed into the hub require some drilling. Therefore it has to be BigJim or DemonSVT as it would take one of them merely 20minutes to unbolt one bracket and stick one of these on to see if it fits. Too easy. However, neither of them seems to have the time now...

Ugh, this couldnt be getting close to production at a worse time for me. With the subframe broke and me looking at a lot of rear suspension removal, I figure I might as well replace some of the other rear suspension pieces (a la bradness) while Im doing so. Unless I just re-install all the worn stock pieces, I have to spend the cash. Which means none for this at the moment.

I need to get freaking hired by Pfizer already! Crappy intern pay isnt even covering the cost of what I have to fix, let alone brakes

Well, at least Ive kept my mouth shut and 'ed in private. Until I have the $$$ to back my interest, I like to keep my mouth closed, for obvious reasons.

The production kits will require new studs? (not whining, just curious)

I say go ahead and double check the fitment then start the GB. Just to make sure. Also, what about the studs that need to be pressed in? Thanks again Tom.

I could probably send you the rear bracket, but it needs the threads tapped. I could probably send Big Jim the front bracket since he doesn't have the rears and you don't have the fronts.
Or if Demon gets back in contact with me I could send both to him and he could do them at the same time. So let me let him contact me with his answer first and if he doesn't have the time then I'll just have to pay the postage to two different places.

For the rest of you...no more questions...lol

I've got how-to files written already but I have to add in pictures to the word document before they are ready. When I get these test-fitted, and I know they will work....then I'll have someone host the word document and you can all download and read to see what you are getting into.

Take deposits to cover material costs, or better still, put together the GB with payment in full required up front, then make a production run with little/no risk to you.

But PM me first, so i can be #1 on the group buy.

Well if I can pick up the 300mm rotors from the parts store, then I can test fit it. Might can drive over there if need be.

Brackets are sent off to the respective testers. We should know in about 3-5 days if the brackets need any more modifications.

I'd offer to test (thanks, Jim ) but you're really far away from me. Since BigJim and Demon are really close, I'd say schedule a test fit with them. I do have Focus SVT front brakes on my car. I also have rear Contour SVT hubs on my back porch; so test fitting the rears would be a snap; I wouldn't even need to take the wheels off.

Looks like the front brakes brackets are gonna work!

BigJim has finished the test and it needed a little trimming on the one edge like I suspected. I'll take the tracing he sent me back down and have them make the corrections.

I'm just waiting on the other bracket to get to Ray and him to test it, but I'm more confident in the rear bracket as it looked like it came out really good.

AT this point I'm ready to start a group buy. I still have to check on a spacer cost but I'll try to do that Monday or Tuesday and it won't affect the overall price a whole lot one way or the other.

Thanks for being patient.

Well then you're [censored]'d!!!

lol unless Ray tells me the brackets are good.

You guys do know the rear brake adaptation require some brain power and intermediate level skill right?
of course, who in here wants to admit they don't have "some brainpower" heheheheh.

I think the rears will be fine.
