I don't think they have the same type of tendency to fail, although I could be wrong.
It's pretty easy to change your water pump though, and you can do a coolant flush while you're at it if you want to.
Alot of times people change it when they do their timing belt because you're in there and it's convenient.
Escpecially on the earlier contours where the wp was run by the timing belt.
