is it possible to "open up" cans of spray paint, empty them into a paint can, and spray a car using previously aerosol-ed paint? i dont see it as a problem, considering its already thinned to spray, but is it actually possible? obviously its under pressure, which creates a bit of a problem.

there maybe a way but I don't think its recommended at all, the contents are under pressure after all.

The color I want to paint my car is rustoleum cobalt blue metallic. They dont make any quantities except spray can, and the supply store near me cantmatch the color properly. I did find a place that puts paint INTO aerosol cans. Ill have to check with them to see if it can be done.

i don't think i would try it, however if you flip the can upside down, you can discharge most of if not all of the propellant from the can. this should make the can easier to open with out it exploding on you.

I'm a model builder myself, and use that ^^ method all the time. It will come out bubbly, still charged with propellant and very cold. If you want to remove ALL the paint, this method will be very inefficient.
I would recommend turning the can upside down in a bucket with something heavy on top and put it outside... let all the propellant discharge, then pop it open with a can/bottle opener. My 2 cents...

well...after trying something out on my old hood, i can get away with a fine mist of the color i want, then clear it with standard automotive clear with no adverse effects, such as wrinkling, which is what happened with a full coat of spray before clear. so i am now getting a few cans of rustoleum cobalt blue metallic, sanding the clear down, then spraying the metallic, then clear coat. here is a pic of what it should look like...

2 light mistings from about foot and a half over the hood makes for a pretty good effect over black.
