I went to buy an oil filter for my 1998 ford Contour 2.0. The book says that the '97 and the '98 use different filter. is this accurate? or will the filter listed for a '97 fit the '98?

no, they are different. the 98+ Zetec uses a different filter than the pre98 Zetec.

i dont remember the exact differences but something about a better/second anti-drainback valve. I imagine it had to do with keeping oil pressure to the VCT system

Looks like the 400 simply replaced the 300 model filter. Threading and pressure look the same but the size changed slightly.
