Hey guys, let me preface: this is NOT designed to be aesthetically pleasing, but it is specifically for road course duty.

I am currently deployed, but before I left a few months back, I put together my own heat extractor hood vents because, well, you know we don't have any options left. Never got a chance to track test them, though, because I left on very short notice. Whenever I get a little bit of downtime out here, I'll search the classifieds or just read around for mod ideas. My Stang is my track toy, but I sooo want to get my Tour out on the track, too, but still use it as my DD.

Recently, I've been reading about more and more people installing one of these on their rides:

...On everything from miatas to civics to older stangs. Specifically, track vehicles...not DD's. And it got me thinking that this could be a very good idea. I have a heat extractor hood on my Stang and it does wonders out on the track coupled with other goodies to help keep temps down.

For our experienced Contour brethren, would one of these fit on the stock hood, based on the curvature (the contour) of the hood? Is there enough room between the top of the motor and the underside of the hood to make this fit? Where would the placement go?...to dissipate as much heat as possible? After that, the install is pretty straightforward:

Here's a few pictures I found on a few vehicles. I guess a couple guys got laughed at hard for being "ricers"...like they were doing it just for looks. Oh well, though. If it works, it works:

Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

I think if it was installed right, it could look good (it was my second option for a "hood scoop"). I wound up going with a Subaru Legacy hood scoop and molding into my hood. Put the opening right above the IMRC. Looked good too!

I also scooped these up from the junkyard a couple weeks ago. They are hood vents from an old BMW 5-series. They match the curve at the back of the hood. Planning on using them on a Mystique hood.

Cracker, that's a pretty sweet mod with the hood scoop. :)

What I'm looking for is the functionality out on the road course: releasing hot air from the engine compartment helps keep the engine running optimally. I want cool air forced in through the grill and hot air out through vents. I know my Stang doesn't miss a beat at all.

I wonder if anyone has tried this vent, yet, on a Tour. I know Tour guys get pretty creative. :)

How about a 1/4" spacer under the hood hinges so the rear of the hood sticks up a bit?
A small gap like that would be barely noticeable at all, but would provide a vent size similar or larger than than any of those vents, while still minimizing weather related concerns.
Also, you could undo it anytime you want.

You really need to sell me that hood...

INSTALLING THE EXTRACTOR BETWEEN THE RADIATOR AND THE CAM COVER WILL ADD DOWNFORCE AT HIGH SPEEDS. IT GIVES THE AIR COMING IN THE GRILL AN EXIT OVER THE HOOD CREATING DOWNFORCE. IT CREATES A VENTURI EFFECT AND CREATES A HIGH PRESSURE AREA ON TOP OF THE HOOD. WHY DO YOU THINK THE FORD GT's HAVE THE DUCTS IN THE FRONT DECK.....FOR COOLING AND DOWNFORCE.

After I put the first cowl hood on my Lightning it flew up and smashed in my windshield around 75mph. True story. If you're going to a different kind of hood use hood pins.
