CSVT: How aggressive can you get with the offset?

I have a 1998 CSVT and I want to get some new wheels. So far, here are the specs I've found for wheels I like.

16x7
+26
+40
+45

The +45 I know I can work easily with a 225/50/16 tire ... but what about the +40 or +26? I don't mind rolling and pulling the fenders, but I don't want to make the handling of the car all funky with the low(er) offset.

I have 17X7 wheels with a 40mm offset. lowered on B&G springs they fit fine with 215/45/17s and rubbed a little with 225/45/17s after rolling the fenders the larger tires no longer rub.
