Im thinking about tapping into the power to the sunroof switch,(*motor) to eliminate the mess of hanging wires.I have a garmin gps and a valentine 1 but the cords look ewiee! Anyone do this? Have pics? I'm trying to find ideas.

Sorry no pics, but back in the early 90's I had a Honda CRX I did similar with. Had a small radar unit that I hardwired from the domelamp (just in front of the manual sunroof). I ran the wire out the edge of the headliner by the left sun visor and used the visor clip to keep the detector away from the glass a bit. With the low stance of the car you couldn't even see it till you sat inside. Worked very well for me.

Good idea. If I get another ticket (curiously never been ticketed in the SVT) I'll be getting a V1. I thought about wiring it into the moonroof/dome power and mounting it above the rearview (actually taking the rearview off and finding one from a newer car with autodim and maybe temp or compass).
Would like to see if anyone has done something similar?

Did it in my old SVT. no pictures.... It looks like a radar detector mounted above the mirror and hardwired to the sunroof consol.

nope the escort x50 fit right above the mirror... passenger couldnt use the visor tho... just used an escort hardwire kit and tapped the sunroof motor

Did the hardwire kit have an inline fuse? It would need to be a small one but i would feel better if i had one to protect my bloody valentine1. Im going to mess with the 98 i have first before i take apart my baby.It should be just a ground and a power wire? Did you ground it with a screw or just to the ground wire on the sunroof motor? I will also do this for my GPS. Yummy it will look sweet! I will take full pics and show a how to,i just hope my how to works:crazy:

Ok tested on the 98.

Gently pry the switch cover off with a small flathead.

Then unhook the wires to the switch panel.

Now thats out of the way, unscrew the 2 screws holding the cover on.Don't pull down, slide out twards the rear of the car,as it is slid over the top of the sunroof motor.

Now i imagine that these are the wires i want to tap into? The only other wires are going to the sunroof switch. Only 2 wires going in but neither one is black! What i wonder is the power and ground?

I tested the wires.Purple is power, very strange! These pics are the actual install on my 99

I got a 3 dollar inline fuse from R. shack and used a 5amp fuse, since i will be running my gps and v1. The V1 calls for a 2amp fuse so......
Use a quick connector and tie in the fuse to the power.

I ran the wires through the headliner pretty easily, the 2 wires on the left are for the gps,and the 4 wire mess is the V1

If you chose to cut your factory V1 cord it has 4 wires,i found that green was power and red was ground! The other 2 are useless?
I chose to mount the gps in the upper left hand corner....

And the v1 cord going into the headliner.

I must continue in another post,im only allowed 10 pics.

i thought radar detectors where not suppose to be sitting out visually for the officer to see:confused: what happens if the V1 is seen by an officer and could you take pics of the actual device hanging in your car or is that an illegal post on CEG

Detectors are legal in most states, I wouldn't even stealth mount one in a non-legal state personally. The thing is, if you get pulled over (for speeding) it doesn't matter if it's legal to posses or not. You look guilty with that on your glass. So it takes any leverage of innocence away.

Here is the GPS transformer i must wire in. It transforms the 12 volt to 5 that my garmin nuvi 205 requires. I gutted the cigg lighter adapter in the stock gps cord. The V1 is wired and working! I updated the pics in my first post,in the event you did not re-examine the posts.

Ok here is the transformer wired in. Ugly but it will be hidden.

And cleaned up.

Another. The reflection in my mirror is the change in my center tray,in the event you are a curious George. I had to face it down so the flash would not interfere.

more to come......

What does looking guilty have to do with anything? The cop is either going to write you a ticket or they'll make a judgement call and write you a warning.

You said it. They make a judgement call. If you can sell yourself as deserving, they're more likely to issue the warning. If they view you as wanting to get away with purposely speeding, are they likely to judge in your favor??

The cops that I know personally dont care if you have a radar detector or not. They said they only mention it when the driver mentions it first as an excuse that they shouldnt have been pulled over.

Hello, you're in TX. Things are more down to earth than in some places. My experience is with power hungry dicks with the occasional old guy who's been around long enough to dislodge his head from his rear end. Not all cops are created equal.

looks for posts on the old forum from rkneeshaw as his how to was link to on the main page. however it appears the website doesn't exist any more.

No they certainly arent. I had a cop start screaming the second I rolled the window down because I hadnt turned the car off yet. You always have the 50/50 chance of getting someone who is just doing their job and someone who is using their job to feel a little better about themselves. And sometimes you'll get a state trooper who looks silly in a cowboy hat and he'll tell you that even though its part of the uniform its his least favorite part of the job. :)

:nonono: Before i wired in the transformer i may have touched the power to my 2 week old garmin

It will not turn on:shocked:

Oh well,lesson learned:blackeye:

I know that will never happen again. Learn from my mistake. At first i did not realize the cigg lighter power cord had a transformer in it!
