Going into town on saturday night around 7:00 or so and it was me my sister (behind me) and my good friend andy(shotgun). we were maybe 2 miles from our house when somehting went wrong. bakcend came out right, overcorrected left and since ive powered out of so many slides (expecially in winter) i could tell that we it was too bad of one and we were going around. i saw us heading for the ditch (sideways) and thought to myself, well this isn't good hope we don't get stuck in there. the problem was, when we hit the ditch we wern't slowing down. the car was fine going down the ditch (still sideways) and it happened so fast that all i remember is somehting wierd happening. then all the sudden we hit. or landed is more like it. the car went down to the bottom of the ditch, had too much momentum to go up the other side because it was steep enough that the center of gravity on the car was too high and it could only take so much. we flew about 5 feet, landed on the roof and slid another 10 before the Contour came to a stop. i can not describe what it was like thinking ok, this will be a pain and then all the sudden you hear this awful loud noise and your on your roof sliding. instinct took over and after freeing everyone, kicked the driver door open and we scampered out. we all walked away without a scratch. i will never forget when we landed on the roof- everything from the scrreaming tires to the glass shattering and the loud BAM it made when we landed. seeing the car with all 4 wheels up in the air demolished right infront of me is a also a very distrubing sight i hope i never have to see again.

But the biggest part for me was that my sister should be in the hospital right now because of a slightly dysfunctional seatbelt(we were all wearing them and they saved us), not to mention me and andy should be hurt more. i could care less about the car, i mean yea its gone and taht sucks but that stuff happens. however jsut knowing that i am responcible for my passengers and could have killed them because of my driving is a very, very sobering thought. my driving will forever be different, especially with other people in the car. i guess the biggest part is that while i wasn't screwing around, it shouldn't have happened and i could have seriously injured us over somehting that was avoidable. when you land on your roof jsut the glass and noise and everything is somemthing that will stick with you. however, the shock kinda wore off taht night and now im jsut a little paranoid when im riding with other people when they screw around and turn too sharp or swerve stupidly as it brings back memories of that night. i guess for those who have done this (probally most on here) you know what its like. for those who don't, its really unexplainable. but that was all the bad part. looking back after it happened, i saw the tracks and we had stopped the backend from coming around (i had the whel locked turing into the slide) and the front was starting to come back around. if we had 1 more lane we may have made it witout rolling it. and can you say small town- we knew all 3 officers at the scene and were friends with the wrecker driver! but thats a good thing.

I guess i can say some good came out of this- i am definitly not going to mess around with other people in the car again, and my stupid car can get replaced with a better one. it was a great car except that it randomly ran rich and got terrible gas mileage and no power and is seemingly unfixable ( i had done everything up to this point). So now taht it is over, the insurance will give me $3k for it!!!! My jaw dropped when i heard taht as i was thinking 2k. 56000 miles, excellent condition except for that engine problem. but these cars arn't worth anything so i was happy to hear that. So now I am looking for a SOHC Explorer or SVT Contour. anyway, heres the pics. they don't look near as bad as it is. not all the grass everywhere, especially in the rim on the last pictures (i swapped the SVT rims for the steelies while a friend was taking the pics at the junk yard). and the sunroof didn't shatter! here they are:

*I have no idea how to use these new forums so I'm going to paste the links and see what happens. can someone help me out with this?

I couldnt read all that, without it being broken up a bit more, but I hope you're ok

yikes! that was a nice pre98. Sorry to see it go. Im glad everybody is OK, time to find an SVT ;)

Yes, Having bad accidents are enough to make you think about others driving habits as well as your own. I wrecked my SVT last year and it was pretty bad. I WAS screwing around. It is the only wreck I have had and will definitely be the last one caused by myself. Luckily I was the only vehicle involved as there was no traffic in sight. It's very sobering, and I now find myself driving 5-10 MPH UNDER the speed limit. It's good that no one got hurt. I thought the same thing to myself as I had my best friend shotgun. "How in the hell are we not hurt" (I completely removed the front end of the car) We hit a concrete barrier somewhere between 95-105 MPH. This should go to show people that there is absolutely no reason to jack around on public roads in your car. I know we all do it or have done it before, but it only takes once. I had always prided myself in my driving capabilites until that night. You are never good enough for ish to not happen while driving. Again it is good to hear everyone is alright after that. One thing I can say for the Contiques is that they are very good at protecting the occupants in a bad wreck...

Holy crap, I've noticed that car in the Fritz lot before...I was waondering why I haven't seen it in a while. Wow...more proof that these cars were/are a lot safer than they were made out to be.

Man, that sucks! Glad everyone OK. Oh yeah....here come the vultures... Will you be able to part it out, ie. the leather seats??

Glad to read that you all walked away from this.

But i am confused...

Did they let you swap wheels or something?

Not to mention the lighting makes it look like you repainted your car haha

I struggled reading through it. Not because its sad, but because of how its written.

Sweet wiper blades BTW.

Sorry about the loss but its good that everyone was fine and all that was hurting was your pride.

First the Lotus and now this.

(i swapped the SVT rims for the steelies while a friend was taking the pics at the junk yard)

well, see if you can snag the svt exhaust off of it before the insurance company gets a hold of it. Then sell it for a little extra $$ in your pocket. If you find a car that you like and it is from MN send me the plate number and I will look it up at work and see the previous owner/milage between each person/ etc etc. Oh yeah, what you doing with the rubber from those SVT rims? :)

How fast were you going when it happened? Were you in a turn or did you hit black ice or what?

Sucks that it happened, but no one was hurt, thats the most important thing.

yeah that's what I was wondering too.

Cars aren't toys and roads aren't playgrounds.
It's too bad it took something like this to make you take a more serious look at driving.
Good to hear you're all still alive.

Pics didn't look as bad as I was expecting. I know the feeling after flipping a car of being all paranoid as a passenger. I went through the same thing when I was 16.

Well, I'll try to answer all the questions here. First of all- can;t really describe what happened besides we were going 50-55 down the highway (any faster and we would be in those trees) and my buddy Andy was talking to me about how it was running and stuff (we just spent 3 hrs working on it in 30 degree weather-not fun) and it was doing worse so i was already kinda mad. then i don't remember much besides i was like its running terrible and about that time the backend came out as we turned left. I know i helped it as i wasnt very gentle with the wheel (combination of being mad at the car and not paying attention etc). I know, stupid and shouldn't have happened. I know thats rather vague but thats about all I can say, the rest is skiding and so on.

Parting it out- Not really worth it as the leather seat is power and if you want to install that then i guess i could see what i can do. However, i told innsurance to take it, i don't have much use for it so you will have to get back to me fast before they come get it so i can work somehting out. As far as the exhaust- was going to pull it but couldn't due to no way to haul it back, too hard to get off etc. I am going to sell the rims most likley with tires on them but could be talked into seperatly, shoot me a pm with what you have in mind and I'lll give you the specs on them and all.

BadDoctorFrost, which Contour do you drive here? I have seen a few around, some of which are actually taken care of. Yea, that was my car in the Fritz parking lot.

PaleHorse- right on, although i wasn't intentionally screwing around at the time, everything else you said about sums it up.

Does the engine still run? What engine and tranny is it?

I have driven fast on a turn and I have felt the car trying to lean on one side. You were probably going too fast for that turn.

I totaled my mystique, it had 168,000 miles when it sipped its last drip of gas, i got it for a grand, I learned my lesson and now i got an SVT and its pimp, a huge treat and upgrade, get one you'll be very satisfied

It was a 2.5 liter auto. I am guessing he hit black ice with the rear tires.
