i found some old threads that said i gotta buy two new keys then take it to ford and have the car programmed for me. can i buy the two pats off ebay and then take em to ford or will ford not program em if i didnt buy them of em? its a 98.5 svt. i havent officially lost em. i got a buddy checkin his vehicle when he goes ot class for em but ive tore my apartment apart tryin to find em and didnt have any luck

so im lookin at like 200 after the keys and the programming?

I'll ask my brother how much it cost him, he lost his only key to his SE.

He went to the dealership with his registration and picked up 2 new key's with remotes a couple of days later. I'm not sure if it actually took a couple to be ready or if he was just lazy.

Ford only keeps keycode records for 10 years... so your 98 won't be a problem. They can lookup the code and cut the key while you wait. Only takes a minute. They'll probably use the keys you bring them if you want. Just make sure you buy the right ones. Contours use 10 cut keys, where every other Ford that year (except Escort) used 8 cuts. It should be Ilco number H73. My dealer charges 1 hour to program the keys. They're cut free when you buy the keys from us. The expensive part might be getting the car to the dealer!

Do understand correctly you only have one Key? Last summer I broke a key in the ignition and went to the locksmith, being a 98 althought an early 98 only one working key is needed. He used a "Strattec" #10. Only $30 for the key, programing is using the working key-turn on and off and immediately plug in the new key turn on and off. Now and I'm open for corrections our cars starting with 99's both keys are required before you can make a spare. Other wise you have to go to the dealer althought the locksmith told if he was rich he can purchase all the different manufactures similuators/testboxes. The cost is prohibitive ie $30 -40 k each?
Just be glad you don't own a Camry/Avalon and loose both keys --the dealer replaces the PCM, all lock mecanisms and the electronics $5-6K and I doubt your insurance will cover that?
Bottom line can we continue afford such secruity that the bad guys already have figured out anyway?
