Tranny going bad?

Over the holidays I took a trip to visit family and while I was on the interstate my O/D Off light starting flashing. It didn't lose O/D or anything , it still ran fine. Its a 96 Contour SE 2.5L ATX. Anyone know what this could mean?

It could mean anything or nothing.

First check fluid level and condition (should be clear red/pink and full).

Then scan for CEL codes (free at autozone or advance). Then scan for ATX codes (might cost one hour labor).

The transmission's fault codes, if present, will post as Pxxxx codes. There is no need to "scan for ATX codes" separately unless you need to perform the transmission diagnostic drive cycle from the factory service procedure.

However, this does require that you use a scan tool or code reader that offers support for "manufacturer's codes" (P1001-P1999). The cheapest code readers do not support the extended fault codes. Consult the owner's manual for the scan tool/code reader in question to determine performance capabilities of the tool.
