Ok, here's the deal. I need to know if the 2.5L Duratec will bolt up to the FD rx-7 transmission. I decided to go with a cheaper swap than the 5.0 but still has enough power to satiate me until i can add some boost.

btw, here's the plans:

1991 MX-5 + 2.5L SVT engine + RX-7 Trans and rearend + eventual boost

thoughts, ideas, comments, concerns, answers to my question, and other hoopla is very much welcome.

i know that the 3.0L bolts up (or somebody already makes an adapter plate). i might have to up the displacement :)

do you know of any manual trans rwd trans that will bolt to the 2.5 or 3.0L?

Im pretty sure there arent any. Everything has been custom as far as i know.

dang. i know monster miata makes a conversion for the stock transmission to the 5.0 (it can handle something like 500hp as can the driveshaft, just not the rearend)

what do you think i would expect to pay for a custom adapter and do you think it would be better steel or aluminum? custom adapters mean custom gaskets, but that can be handled easily. (you can find gaskets without the holes)

HAHA!!

That setup will end up costing you way way more than a 5.0 conversion.
Think about it, tons of people put 5.0's in, all the parts are already designed and proven. You are venturing into uncharted territory, You will waste tons of money and get next to no return on it.

Nubie STFU!

Don't discourage people from doing different things! But this adventure would be quite expensive!

Although I could only imagine a 5.0 swap into the Miata is sweet as sin, but it would have to be a monster to try and drive (seriously, ass load of power, tiny car). Putting in a 3.0L hybrid would give you great power, with alot more drivability. (tiny car, large amount of power)

If you have the money, patience, and ability to commit to a project like that, go for it!

Check this thread out. I have looked into finding a RWD transmission for the Duratec V6. Enough info in here to get you off on the right foot. Over at MEG, there is a guy who's swapping in a 3L into an Escort, converting it to RWD and is using the getrag 221 (IIRC) to do so. Any BMW shop worth their salt can upgrade these transmissions to handle worthwhile power, but in stock form.... they won't put up with much.

HTH

The 2000-2002 Lincoln LS came with a 3L Duratec and a 5-speed. It is RWD.

The tranny is not noted for being very strong though. Also this manual option is very rare!

Your best bet is just to weld up a modified flange for a built T-5 or Tremec.
