While looking through MercadoLibre (the Mexican equivalent of eBay), I came across this 1997 Contour:

Nothing seems out of the ordinary until you look inside:

I don't think I've ever seen a console like that before. It looks to have a coin tray behind the shifter bezel and no cupholders. Has anyone seen one like this before?
 
i think ebay should change their name to mercadolibre!! it just rolls off the tongue so much better!

lol now i'm gonna be saying it all day...like the taco bell lion saying carne asada! carrrrrrrrrrne asada!!!

I have the same console, 96 GL MTX. The cupholder (singular) is behind the p-Brake. I DO NOT However Have the Steering wheel Thingy! :)

The only thing that looks close to the 98-00 is the immediate area that the shifter is at. Other than that...:shrug:

As for the anti-theft thing, It looks like it prevents you from turning the steering wheel.
 
Well, unless they did a conversion to 98-00 then it must be 95-97. Look at the first pic, its definitely a 95-97 front end and I'm not blind.

I have a 00 mystique and my console does not look like that at all. Even where the e-brake and shift are; they are completely different.

Same thing with mine, my pre98 never looked like that, and my 99 doesnt look like that either. It looks like a combination of the pre 98 and post 97 consoles, but with no cup holders.

I wounder if the mexicans (when building our cars) figured out that the pre98 cup holder sucked nuts and decided to do their own design.

Look at the back of it... It looks like there is a fold out cup holder back there too :shocked:

On a side note, this car makes me wish we had the mondeo EVEN more
