I have a 99 contour with the 4cyl motor and auto trans, my question is, can I pull it as a unit from the top? If so, how?

Short answer is Yes and the how is with a crane 
Longer answer is disconnect wires, fuel lines etc, Pull half shafts, pulling radiator for clearance also helps. Unbolt and tie off A/C so you don't loose charge. Chain it up and take a load off, unbolt mounts front, back and both sides. Crank it up and out.
