Good idea with the peg board, but will it actually hold the weight of all of the gear? Maybe some metal underneath for additional support and wrap the whole thing in cloth?

By the immediate back edge, I have a piece of 2x4 wedged into the opening of the spare tire compartment and screwed into the peg board. Surprisingly enough, stiffing up the weak end made the entire thing 10 times tougher.

Yes. It supported 145 pounds directly above where the spare tire would be without any support below it and just the 2x4 support all the way to the back.
