uh..i don't think there is much unless you have the tools to remove the exhaust resonator yourself and happen to have some 1-3/4" straight pipe lying around.

gutting the cat is always free.

forcing air into the intake is also free if you have the right tubing and harware.

can't think of much else.

how many people have machining tools lying around in their garages? im talking about bolt on do it yourself performance. that would definitely not be free for the average person.

'doorknob' ?? Nice talk, Thunder, don't bother reading on, the rest of the message is for the mechanically competant. I guess this excludes you.

The machining was done in a friends basement machine shop using an antique Bridgeport and a lot of old-time skill. I wanted to see how difficult it would be to make the prototype and prove the concept. Some of the work was done by hand (throttle shaft slot grinding & polishing of the inside of the throttle body) This is the type of job a local shop could do. I have about 6 or so friends that have basic shops where this could be made.

If you want to just do a straight bore the project would be even easier.

Anyway, as Perry said, if anyone is interested I have Powerpoint drawings, photos and a description how to machine a throttle plate at the correct angle (7.8 deg) to give the proper ocal shape and beveled edges. Leave me an eMail message

dude, the key words in the orignal thread were "easiest homemade", not unbolt the whole intake, take it to a friends house, polish it on some antique machine along with your hands. yeah, duh, anyone can polish their intake and make it breathe better for more power, but the question was for easy homemade mods. not go to great lengths for better breathability mods.

Hey,

TBunder, don't be such a tool. You used a relative term such as easy.

Easy for RubY meant painting his taillights. Easy for jpwesson was a little machine work. What is easy for one is probably nuclear physics for another.

Just smile and say cool, you can do stuff like that, I'd like to, but it's probably out of my league. Or sumptin like that.

Try some decaf today!

The spirit of my post was how to do things cheapest. With good drawings and some basic knowledge of how to make things you could take a $40 junk throttle body to a local machine shop and have all the work except polishing and assembly done for $75-100.

This beats paying Gude $275 for their bored TB (good product by the way) plus sending your existing TB as a 'core'. Of course, with the Gude all you have to do is 'bolt it on' but you are out $275 plus shipping plus your original body.

Using a junkyard TB, I got to develop and perfect the TB without taking the original off the car. it took me about an hour to remove the original, bolt on the modified TB and adjust the throttle sensor.

In terms of difficulty, designing and building this TB is about as difficult as changing cam gears, and definiely easier than reprogramming the ECU, or port matching the intake to the head.

i just renamed this thread to how to find a junkyard throttle body and polish it to flow more air. is this a new idea? not! but im out and this thread went nowhere it was supposed to go. i guess there are no easy homemade free mods for the zetec. and you all chill!! an easy mod is one that can be done in one step and take less than 20 minutes while improving performance of the car. not block the lighting of your taillights(dumbest mod ive heard of btw)or take several steps to polish some tb. granted that will work, it is by no means an easy or time efficient mod. and not free either, as i know no junkyards that will give away throttle bodies to public citizens.

okay lets get back to the subject of the post. the easyest thing i've done so far is run a shop vac hose from the intake to the front bumper for more cool air. but i got a air scoop made that fits in the middle of the bumper between the support plastic pieces that go from the top to the bottom parts. it cost me about 20 for it. it is made from stainless steel. the shop vac hose hooks right up to it with just a clamp holding th hose to the scoop. the scoop is mount to the bottom with some self tapping screws. but im done for now.

Check out Home Depot. There are a lot of parts you can make with 3" and 4" dia plastic pipe, flexible couplings and the like.

I replaced the restrictive inlet on my air box (ZX2 is tubular) with a flexible coupling and a part cut from a 3" black plastic 45 deg el. Works nice and cost less than $15 for everything.

Dang you guys. Didn't you read INTO his Topic?
Thunder Blunder here wants to know how to make mods that will make his car go faster or improve performance without spending money!! We know that's impossible so we really shouldn't entertain his ignorance. Then again, he also wants to know how to do the mods without using any tools at all!

Get off the list Bunder Blunder or whatever!!!

Take your seats out and paint the seat base assembly. I painted mine and if I had a scanner I would show you how good it looks. All you need is sandpaper, primer, and spraypaint.

Also, get rid of your doording guards and badging. Put a $3.00 mesh grill on.

No, tbunder, you're the idiot. You are looking for the impossible. Free mods that don't take any time and don't require any work. You're not going to find that. Someone mentions a free mod that should offer decent performance, and you turn him down.

What more do you want? Want me to tell you how to make a turbo out of an empty milk jug and some toothpicks?

Perhaps you have heard the saying, "Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?" Or maybe, "You can't get something for nothing." Basically, any modifications you do will cost you money or take some mechanical apptitude.

The cheapest mod you'll probably find is a drop in K&N air filter for your stock air box. Sure, it costs you $40 or whatever for the filter, but you should notice a slight increase in power. Next would be cutting out your resonator and replacing it with a straight pipe. If you have a hack saw, some straight exhaust pipe, and a couple exhaust clamps you can do it yourself in your driveway with a little time.

There's two suggestions, take them or leave them. But don't come to the forums asking people to do the impossible for you, and then turn them down then they do it.

Blunder, it doesn't surprise me that you would come back swearing and cussing and offending me or others with your childish antics. You obviously aren't even 18 yet. You have got to be kidding me. You came on here with the most retarded/insane question. Some guys took the time out to let you know of some things they did and you come back calling one of the contributors a doorknob? And then call me a MF? How dare you. What kind of list do you think this is, you nut? This is an adult forum. Granted some of use disagree with each other on issues, but they are worth the bandwidth to debate...but your nonsense is an abomination to this entire list!! This is not the kiddy page. Go crawl back into bed with my mommy? Sheez, graduate high school first.

One of the moderators shoudl DELETE this whole thread and not just LOCK it. That way, when someone looks in the archives your stupidity won't even be seen or waste OURs and Lance's precious space.

The fellas came on here to help you with some ideas and you just totally disrespect them. You're the kind of moron that nobody wants here. Leave, go home, go back to school, go drive somewhere else in the car that your parents bought you. You're a disgrace to even be a member here? What have you contributed? Nothing but disrespect... Shame on you.

John

Yes I KNOW this is not a performance mod, but it's the only thing that I have done that didn't cost me anything. The loose headlamp fix:

But in a way, it IS a performance mod, it helps the headlamps "perform" as they are not shaking and vibrating any more!

tbunderthe only really cheap performance mod i can think of is huge in the rice community it's called stickers put them all over your tour so we know your an idiot and we don't have 2 let u open your mouth 2 prove it.1 more inexpensive mod drill a hole in the airbox and attach a hose run the hose into the car then stick the hose as far in your ear as possible and you'll have ram-air with all the high pressure airt in there u should be smokin the tires right off your tour thanx rollin

i find it totally hilarious that you few idiots who have answered this post are still doing just that.....what morons! must all be from canada, or at least up near the border. no wait, all from Minnesota. thats it!!
