As you guys probably know by now, I'm (re)building a 3L I got from blackcoog, the one that had the injector stick open. I originally intended to just clean it up, replace the rod that was bent, check the crank and call it good. Well, things change a bit and I now find myself in a semi rushed build as my flywheel in the SVT is so bad the starter doesn't catch more than it does, and it's quicker/easier to push start the car, which gets really old. So now I've torn the engine all down, had the crank checked (everything was fine and within specs) replaced the rod with a freebie a tech had from another 3L, replaced the bearings, hot tanked the block and started painting/reassembling and figured I share some pics with you guys. Right now, I'm waiting on 4 more rod bolts (should have them thurs., lost one package somehow) so I can finish installing the pistons, and waiting to get my heads back from a fellow I work with who is porting and polishing them for me. Anyway, on to the pics!

Here's how she got to me, blackcoog was pretty pissed as this is not how he sent it.

All mounted up on the stand ready for teardown

I guess I didn't really get any teardown pics, but heres a couple of the cylinder bores, in good shape still with crosshatching still visible

The block and pan temp. bolted together for painting, pre masking

And then some after painting, just the valve covers, front timing cover, block and oil pan for now, sort of mocked up if you will, gutless and obviously, without heads. I'm hoping to finish up near the end of next week with the engine.

So, there it is so far. I'll try and get more pics as I put it back together. I want to get pics of the cams because blackcoog says they're 3L cams, and I'm inclined to believe him, but they all seem to have an orange stripe on them which I've always read indicates SVT cams. Anyway, feel free to comment, I just felt like sharing.

Hey man, that looks awesome. Is that powdercoat? Definitely a cool color combo and finish on the valve covers. I like the textured finish of em...

Thanks. It's not powdercoat, just something I thought I'd try: self etching primer, followed by spray on bedliner, followed by flat red header paint. Turned out pretty good in my opinion.

The valvecovers look sick! I want the Ford Racing Blue on mine. What Brand of bedliner did you use? After you sprayed the liner, did you scuff it or just spray it on? I have a set of stock covers that Im going to try it on.

damn it, moving along nicely. You have always been a fan of the red/black combo! Keep going, you are motivating me to get on mine!

Wow, the engine looks great. I can't wait to what it looks like installed.

I'm not sure what the shipper could have done to completely demolish the crate that engine was in. You'd think the engine would be damaged if they dropped it.

The stuff I used is from a company called morton, spray on bed guard is what the can says. I got it at a local parts store, I don't know if any of the chain stors would have it or not. As for scuffing or anything, I didn't do anything. Just sprayed it on and let it dry. The tough part is getting the texture how you want it. My front cover has way more texture than my rear cover when you look close. Overall, I'm quite happy with the results though. Thanks for the comments so far.

Sweet thanks, Im going to have to try it, I wanting something to stand.

Cams...

Cams...

Ok, here's a couple shots of the stripes on the cams, they sure enough look orange to me, did any of the 3L's have an orange stripe??

And I tried to get a pic of the different textures between the two valve covers, didn't turn out great, but here ya go anyway.

That is a cool idea, kudos man. The only thing I would be worried about is the heat tolerance on the bedliner spray...I sure hope it holds out for ya!

Well, got the heads back with the porting all done, and they look pretty good to me. primed and painted them tonight, along with a couple of brackets and figured I'd post up a few pics of the head work and of the heads painted. Hopefully, I'll get the heads bolted on tomorrow and maybe get the cams and timing stuff all back on as well. on tot he pics.

The ports, the light makes them look pretty rough, but they are much nicer than they look in these pics, and this is just one head.

Ive seen few sets of taurus cams that had the "orange" stripe on them as well. I just say go by the part #.
