While the Contour stereo wasnt the worst factory stereo I've ever heard it was far from the best. They may have been talking about the Mach systems that other cars got but the Contour didnt. As mentioned any off the shelf head unit will already have a better amplifier so it makes sense to bypass rather than try to splice into it.
