Did a compression check. Thoughts?

I bent the crap out of a piston rod. It bent like CRAZY but the crank, piston, and bearings were fine. It ONLY bent, too. I would have expected it to completely snap under the circumstances I put it in.

Stock parts are a lot stronger than many give them credit for.

Ray how did you manage to bend a stock rod? What motor was this in? Not Toms motor I hope.

I don't really think we'll know what to do until we break down the motor and see what is going on. The worse case scenario is the pistons are completely shot (hope they aren't) but if they are we will prolly buy a new block and swap over the pauter rods. However, i think if its just a ring we will prolly rehone it, re-ring it and call it a day.

bent a rod? that's enough to make me go for forged on my new motor. since it's gonna have boost this fall muahahahahahaaa

So..

If you were to fill a cylinder with a fluid that wouldn't compress.. at ALL.. what would the cylinder pressures be when you came around to the compression stroke? A HELL of a lot higher than anything you will EVER boost your engine to.

Well, that's what happened.

I came around a curve, across a low spot and in to a deep recess of water after a heavy rain. Pooled the water around the filter, and sucked it in to the engine. Cylinder 1 rod bent, due to hydrolock.

I wouldn't avoid stock rods for a lot of reasons... the above being a pretty damn good one.

Pretty tough crank too if you know what I mean. Most cast cranks would have bent too with a hydrolock problem. Instead you get absolutely no other damage but a bent rod (not shattered like a champaign glass :ponder: ) with an engine that would still run.
LOL.

Give me a stock block any day! I'll make 400 big ones with it and still have the extra 1000 bones to go play at the casino. :D

okay. nevermind. lol. that sucks ray, hope you get it all together. if you cant get one for cheap, contact steve at tousley ford (MN) he gives you his discount, and its pretty good. PM me if you need a phone number

I did that once with a 1974 Saab 99 and it blew the head gasket. That sucked. My dad wasn't to happy about it either. I think I as like 17 at the time.

this is an old thread, but keep in mind that a valve that doesn't seat as well as the others will leak too. it doesnt' have to be directly pointed at the rings.

my 3L burns a little oil but it gets better every time i change the oil. i think the oil control rings are full of carbon build up.

Sorry, I was searching for threads about oil leaking into combustion chambers due to the fact that I just picked up an SVT with a bad oil leak into #4 cylinder. I saw the picture of that bent rod and went WTF. I didn't even think about the date on the thread.

Looks like I'll be pulling the motor on my car. Contemplating trying to throw a some rings on just that cylinder and seeing what happens. Don't have a lot of $$ to throw at the car right now with the holidays and all. I can probably get the rings out of a motor with bad crank bearings. Of course I'd pull the rings off of one of the good cylinders. All it would cost is time. So I guess it can't hurt.
