Can't shift into first or downshift to second

Hey all,

I have a 99 contour SVT. I just recently had an issue where i can't shift into first from a standstill unless i put it in second and then into first. I also cannot reliably downshift into second gear. Double clutching does not resolve it. I have to just throw the shifter into random gears with the clutch in and then back into second until it works.

I assume the synchros are going? How hard is a synchro job?

So does it grind?

No grind. Its binary either in or out. Also once it's in first I can shift all the way up to 5th sequentially through the gears with no blockage or grind.

I would start by making sure the shifter bolts are tight. Then check the cable ends for play/missing bushings. Finally make sure the shifter counter weight isn't getting hung up on the wiring harness.

Any good threads with the process to check these parts?
