Has anyone actually completed an xtype AWD conversion? If so got a link?

Never seen it done.

There are a few guys over in the UK who have adapted Zetec Mondeo AWD systems to Duratec Cougars.

i saw a post here that looked like someone started it... but i havent found anyone that actually did it. When I got my new black home I took it to the shop sponsoring my motor club and one of the mechanics actually pointed out that the SVT was on the same platform as the AWD x-type and that they could do an AWD conversion on my car. Looking into it, it looks like I could probably buy the parts fairly cheap. Id be looking at 3-4k total conversion cost. Not too terrible considering the cost of a nautilus performance turbo kit.

Just wondering if anyone knew the actual performance gains from it, handling changes and 1/4 mile times on a turbo'd 3.0 w/ AWD

I know 3-4k isnt "cheap" but on my salary I could save that w/out inconveniencing myself in a few months***

It hasn't been done, so you aren't going to get any information on performance gains, handling changes or 1/4 mile times. I would be careful if the shop isn't familiar with our platform.

yup. I am confident in their ability. This particular shop does all their own fabrication in house. Some of their mod projects are very extensive. Right now they are doing a RWD conversion on a del sol too.

Looking at parts, I could get a running 02 for about 2500, but I could just order the parts needed from salvage for about half that.

you could become quite the celebrity if you pull this off. Front subframe seems to be a stumbling block.

4 wheel drive will really come into play if you build a turbo engine .... putting 300+ whp down in these cars is a real challenge.

Not sure how much access to the workshop you will have during the conversion process, but a build thread with photo's would be 'a wildest dream come true' for a lot of guys on here.

good luck with this much desired mod ....G.

The CDW-27 was designed to support any drivetrain layout Ford decided to have, hence the pronounced trans tunnel we have running down the center of our FWD only cars. They did use it as a basis for the X-type. The guy who was building one for rallying before had it about 60% done he estimated when he was unable to store the car and tried to sell it on here, no one bought it that I remember and he stopped coming here.

If I recall he mounted the extension housing and trans to the motor and found that it was not actually that big of an issue and only required what he referred to as a "small" notch. I don't remember any pics, but as far as I know he had the trans mocked up in front and the rear pretty much done, what was left as far as his FS ad was figuring out things like the fuel tank and other systems, then reassembly.

Yea, I read that thread but I couldn't find any info on whether he finished it or not. After I turbo the engine i was planning on doing the gearing final drive, and dyno tune then calling done... but im thinking if im going to put the money in on all that I MIGHT AS WELL toss a few k more into making it AWD and having a 'complete' weekend warrior.

Besides... If I do that I imagine ill be adding the 3k in value on resell. Im sure the 'only' working AWD CSVT should be worth a little extra

Personally if i was going to do it, i'd import an entire sub frame assembly. Would save alot of work/Bolt on. Not sure what i'd do about the transfer case/trans... They never made a v6 4x4 Mondy. So maybe snag a x-type trans and transfer case... Probably fuel tank and fuel pumps too.
