I was driving and shifted into 2nd gear when the shifter went limp. Moves freely up/down and is jammed left/right--the car is stuck in 2nd gear. Had the car towed to the ford dealer where they found the cable end link had broken off in addition to another part (I don't know what is it, unfortunately) which they need to take apart and hopefully fix. I had a cable link, so that was taken care of.
Just had them call me back today and they're unable to get the other part apart because they can't get the car out of 2nd gear. They want to pull the entire transmission off in order to get at the broken part, which has been quoted at $1100 for labor alone.
Wondering if anyone has experienced this before and has any input.
Also, I'm wondering if it would just be worth it to replace the entire transmission with a used one if they need to pull the whole thing off anyway. Bit of a long shot, but if anyone has a used transmission close by and a trusted mechanic in the Grand Rapids area, or would be willing to do it themselves for pay, please let me know as well.
I should be able to drive the car a few miles if necessary, just keeping it in 2nd the whole way.
