Default MTX 75 Removal and tips

    Hello everyone,

I am pulling my transmission from the underside of my 1998.5 Contour SVT totake care of a couple of things that include replacing my clutch, pressureplate, flywheel, and my rear main seal on my engine. I’m now creating a list of things I must doto do this properly and safely. I haveread other threads, posts, and even other forums on how to do this type ofprocedure and decided to compile them here (there is a lot of differentiatingopinions out there lol). I only want tohave to do what is necessary for my circumstances and do not want to do moresteps or mess with other systems unless necessary. Hopefully those of you with more experiencecan help me out with this and also do it safely. My goal is to lower the subframe on the driver’sside but loosen it on the passenger side so I don’t have to drop the wholething and just remove the tranny through the driver side wheel well. Also, while I do this, would anyone beinterested in if I made a video on how I did this to help others and also forfuture reference??

    Ok here we go

    1. Jack car off ground using four or more jack stands
    2. Remove wheels
remove front bumper and side skirts for more clearance and less height to jack car (not needed)
    1. drain oil overnight
    2. drain transaxle fluid overnight
    3. drain power steering resv overnight
    4. Remove battery and battery tray (I didn’t but if it makes things easier for you)
    5. undo suspension strut nut 5 turns on both sides (only driverside needed)
    6. secure radiator from top
    7. remove air cleaner
removal of water pump cover (not needed)

    10. disconnect VSS and other transmission plugs located near the shift tower
disconnection of the fuel lines (not needed)
    1. disconnect starter motor electrical connectors
    2. Removeclutch slave cylinder hydraulic pipe (Do I have to drain brake fluidovernight?? No. Very little will actually come out and the brakes and clutch fluids are divided at a certain point so the level will only drop a little and bleeding the brakes will not be needed)

    5. disconnect lower suspension arm from wheel knuckle and wiring harness bracket
    6. remove right hand axle half shaft and intermediate shaft and secure out of the way

    2. remove front roll restrictor
    3. remove rear roll restrictor
    4. disconnect shifter cable brackets or entire shift tower
    5. Support the engine and transaxle with jacks and wood or support on the engine from above
    6. Loosen the passenger side motor mount bolt as you may need to let the engine sag a bit
    7. loosen passenger side subframe bolts, remove driver side bolts ( I just dropped out the whole subframe. It wasn’t that difficult to get back but will need two people or some creative jack work)
    8. remove upper transaxle mount
    9. remove bell housing bolts
    10. wiggle that puppy out

IMO its much easier/simpler to pull the engine and tranny out as one and then separate and replace whatever you want, bolt together and put back in.

so when you lower the subframe completly, the engine and transmission come down attached to and supported by the subframe or are the engine/tranny seperate from the subframe?

The engine and transmission is attached to the subframe via the roll restrictors in both the front and rear part of the subframe.
