Thread: Water Pump Failure for the THIRD TIME!!

  1. #1

Default Water Pump Failure for the THIRD TIME!!

Im bout ready to pull my hair out...

This is the THIRD Time this YEAR that I have had to replace the water pump...

Is there something Im doing wrong? like something simple i may be missing??

Ive been getting re-manufactured water pumps from oriellys. Im using a new gasket and using gasket sealant on both sides of the gasket, and ive been making sure the mating surface is clean for the new gasket each time

I was driving today, all was well, and next thing i know coolant is coming out at a very very fast rate at the timing belt area of the engine...i just can't figure out why i keep having to do this

Where is the water pump failing, at the shaft seal/bearing?

there is no need to use a sealant on the gasket. the gasket will do its job just fine without any extra help. just use a razor blade to make sure the block is clean (some emry cloth doesnt hurt either). to install, put 2 of the bolts through the pump, hook the gasket on the bolts, and bolt up the pump.

if they are leaking at the shafts after just a couple months then it sounds like a reman problem, not an install problem. I would get a brand new one this time.

I would also check to make sure that the pulley isnt installed crooked as that could cause the shaft to wobble and wear out the bearing and/or seal quickly.

Or the accessory drive belt is over tensioned.

no it can't.... Im just mad cuz im doing it for a 3rd time. and guess what has to come off to replace the water pump...the timing belt, and guess what has to come off to replace the timing belt...the valve cover.

So new water pump=49.99 new valve cover gasket=19.99.. The price just adds up. Now Ive only paid once for the 1st and 2nd water pump cuz when the shaft failed on the 2nd pump i did a warranty replacement which didn't cost anything. I would replace the timing belt also, but since the belt only has about 2k on it im not buying another one.
So i guess bad luck with reman pumps is the culprit here. The pulley always goes on fine and isn't crooked and belt tension is fine too

If the tensioner has gone bad and seized up, yes it can. I would imagine that the serp belt would show wear also,

Ive made up my mind...im done with this car. It is getting junked. Ive spent way too much time, effort and $$$ on a car that is getting me no where except stuck in my driveway. Im putting more money in this car every month than i would be on monthly payments for a new one, so ive made my decision.

Plus I'm in college, and i work 30+ hrs a week. I don't have time to do the same job that takes a whole day 3 times.

This site and all ceg'ers have been very helpful and i thankyou all for that
