Default want to paint my koni struts

i have a set of Koni Yellow struts. the paint is of course falling and peeling off. would like to know how to get all the paint off. Is there a cheap acid that will eat the paint but not eff anything else up. Or exactly how might i go about doing this

there should be many mediums that can be used. there would be chemical strippers or mechanical meathods. I would think that either way you would want to disassemble the strut, if possible and rebuild it at the same time. otherwise start sanding and painting.

I would check out info online. I remember one of the power block shows having a whole episode on how to strip paint.

Man I have the ability but not the know how on disassembling the struts. That would be the bomb if I could do that. I'd problably go around purchasing used worn struts and rebuilding them to sell. Matter of fact I think I will research how to disassemble a strut. If I remember this thread. I will post a how to if successful.

like I said I would guess that Koni struts are rebuildable. at least i believe I have heard of people getting Koni to rebuld them.

either way, not matter how you strip the existing paint and prep them you will need to be careful of the seals etc. if your carfull then I bet you can paint them without having to much worry.

Mine were media blasted and repainted about 5 years ago, not a spec of rust on them. Still look brand new. I called Koni and asked if that would void the warranty and they said no. They also sent me brand new stickers to put on them.

I did mine mechanically with sanding disk on my 4" angle grinder. The wire wheeled the tight areas. The wire wheel works well all over but takes longer. I just dont like working in a 100*+ temps. I followed up with School Bus Yellow paint, it was the ACE brand and was a good match. Im sure its the same as the Rustomeum. I finished up with a fresh pair of the old school triangle sticker.

I suggest really cleaning up the area that goes into the knuckle and only doing a light coat, as this usually gets scraped off getting fit into place. You want protection, but want it to go in a easy as possible. :-)

thank you for that insight. i do have a angle grinder i believe. and just like you i wasn't too thrilled about the thought of doing it in this GA heat/humidity. plus i would most likely put a 3M car painting mask on (because i'm over concerned about my health seeing as i'm a kidney donor for my mom). Which would in turn irritate the eff out of me from the sweat it would collect. Meh i will figure something out.
