Thread: Troubleshooting- right speakers cutting out?

Question Troubleshooting- right speakers cutting out?

I've had this problem for a while now. My front right speakers (5.25 woofer & .75" tweeter) have been cutting out for a while. They'll just stop working, then they'll sputter a lil bit, crackle, etc., then go back to normal. I checked all my connections (head unit, equilizer, amp, crossovers, and speaker connections) and everything seems to check out fine.

The wierd thing is...I've messed with the RCA's on the head unit pre out for the front amp, and it does nothing, then i push the wires back into the hole and the dumb speakers start working for a while, then they start crappin out again. So far that is the only thing that has worked...temporarily... to mess with the RCA connecting to the head unit, but even then I'm not sure what I did so I can't really duplicate it, its just kind of random.

I just thought I'd try you guys, I know some of you are experts so I figured you could probably come up with something I missed!

    TIA

Check the wiring from the head unit to the speaker.

Speaker wires to the headunit (brown/yellow and white/black for front, brown/white and white/violet for back).

Actually, the front speakers are powered off a zapco amp mounted in the trunk - so there are no speaker wires coming out of the head unit. I did check the wire connections between the amp and crossover, and everything was fine. I messed with the RCA's some more at the head unit and I got it to work again, but who knows how long it will last. When I was playin with the rca connectors, it seemed like there was a poor connection caused from corrosion or dirt or something. The thing is, both the connections are very clean. I have the highest grade stinger RCA's and an eclipse 4502 head unit.

Well, then it appears that the RCA connectors might be the problem. You may want to replace them first as they are pretty "cheap and easy" to splice.

Yeah, like I said, they seem and look perfectly fine, but I guess it could be a bad wire connection on the connectors of the head unit pre-outs. I played with it some more last night, and it almost seems like some of the wires might be interfering with eachother. I say this because just moving the wires around would make them work- then not work.

The other thing...I noticed that when the speakers start to cut out, they will start working again if I suddenly twitch the volume way up and then back down again (with the vol. dial). This is only temporary, but I thought it might give some clues.

    Thanks for your help!

If the RCAS plug into the head unit directly (jacks) not pigtails, you might have solder issue inside headunit.
