Thought it was a broken CV...

Starts out in a parking lot - while taking a sharp corner very slowly I hear a snap. Thinking it was the body hit scraping on a speed bump I ignore it. I hear it again and feel some slippage. I park it because I know something is up. I really figured it was a CV because it happened under 5mph, and while turning.

Get everything apart and realize the CV is fine. Try and sping the axle in N and it hangs and I can tell somthing inside broke, probably the differential. I havn't beaten on the car or had it at the strip.

What is it going to take to get the transmission out of the car so I can replace the differential? I've never seen the workings of a FWD car, so I'm unfamiliar on how the transmission and differential connect. I've done gear swaps and locker installs on my truck, is this going to be similar? Any help or tips are greatly apreicated, this was my DD to and from work and school..

It takes time, but not that hard if you just go cautiously and logically. Just pull the whole engine and tranny through the top and set it on the ground. Separate the trans from the engine and send it off to get a new differential. Do any engine work/mods while you have the chance.

Yeah, I got the trany out of the car. Dropped the 2 front bolts outa the subframe, and pulled the transmission out of the wheel well. I opened up the bellhousing and found this.


The tranny is in the shop right now getting some work done, specifically some differential stuff. I got this stuff on saturday

My DD svt has a LSD in it and I love how it launches and pulls through corners. Need to get the one for my other SVT put in

Ya, its gona rock, but after that payment to Ford, I'm broke as a joke... Thank god I got a torsen though, Christmas came early! Traction FTW!

Well good job. I have to ask though, how long to pull the trans through the wheel well, was it easy in your opinion, and were you able to do it without damaging any rack&pinion, AC lines, etc?

Well... TRicker and I did it in about 6 hrs including a 1.5hr trip for a cherrie picker and also taking our sweet ol time making sure we didn't break anything. We also had to cut a bolt of the transmission and then use a picklefork and a 5lb maul to seperate the trans from the motor. We oly broke a small connector from the roll resistor to the strut. Everything went extremly well, the intermediate shaft slipped outa with ease and the subframe bolts came out like butter. This was easier then I thought it was going to be... I just got word from the tranny shop and they got the old diff out, torsen in with new bearings and spedo gear. I hope TRicker (Tyler) and I can get that thing bolted to the motor and the master cylinder bled by the end of Thursday night. Here is a compliation to the pix I took, the magnet in the transmission was absoutly covered with metal shavings from the spider gear, I found no metal in the transmission and the oil didn't have much in it either...

All in all I say we did a lot of screwing around and looking. We had some friends stop by and minor things get in the way. We didn't touch the AC lines, besides unbolting them from the subframe; and for the rack&pinion we didn't touch it or even look at it.(we unbolted the steering from the inside because we originally had planned on completly dropping the subframe) I'd say that this is easy to do, it almost apears like the wheel well was contoured to fit the transmission through it. We had to unbolt the roll restrictor and remove the strut, that was all for that side.

Okay, sounds similar to just pulling the whole motor if I compare overall time. It takes 4 hours to pull the motor from driving into the garage to laying it on the ground with a cherry picker....at least for me.
This assumes you don't run into siezed/rusted bolts and stuff.

So I guess it just depends on preference.

Hmm, I was looking your picks. I did my SVT and my friends SVT and we took a little different route of taking the tranny out. Never bothered with the strut, I see you took it all out. And there are no a/c lines attached to the subframe...IIRC. I think the worse thing was the lines that went into the rack and pinion. They are awful to get back in, therefore we just unbolted the R&P from the subframe and tight it up hanging, so we could take the frame out. was much easier to get the tranny out then, with the frame gone. But it should take 2 people with not much experience about 12 hours to take it out, and install it back in (including clutch and flywheel swap)...if no rusted bolts are torn of course, which is never the case

Yeah, I just had a 3L swap and a Spec clutch installed, so I dont even have to look at it. I'm hoping in the time that we have we can get the tranny mounted to the motor and the master cylinder bled.
