    Default Weird tach problem...

OK, so as some of you may know, I have a V6 tach installed in my Zetec. I did the resistor mod to make the tach read correctly. Today when I started my car, the RPM's were REALLY high, or so the tach said. As it turns out, the tach is reading ~ 3x the actual RPM's. I'm not too good with electrical and whatnot, but could this be caused by a worn out resistor by chance? Or maybe the solder has busted loose? I feel this might be the case, because I installed the resistor to make the tach read HIGHER than it's supposed to in the first place. I'm guessing not enough current is flowing. Now with that being said, does anyone else have any ideas? Or am I on the right track and should I just fix the solder? (I really don't have the time to go through the time to take apart the cluster now, school is killing me...)

    test the resistor.

I don't have means of testing the resistor unfortunately. That would require my purchase of a multimeter, correct?

    yes..

You can get el cheapo multimeters for like $5 or $10 that will work for basic stuff like that for a little while

a multimeter is a good tool for anyone to have. but I have one and so does greg. I'll try to bring it to UMass tomorrow if I go.

but that is alittle confusing. you installed a resitor to make the tach read higher and its now reading even higher? if the resistor broke off or came disconnected I would think it would read lower then before

Well you have to break one of the connections on the circuit board and reroute it through a resistor. So if it broke loose, it would aid in reducing the voltage...I think. I just wasn't sure if there is anything else that could cause this weird situation. I hope it isn't related to my wiper stalk malfunction, like a cracking wiring harness!
