Default Stock E1s VS. 17" Wheels

I've had a set of 17" rims and tires on my Contour for as long as I can remember and now that I had to take a few budget cuts (at least I have a new HMS Trans) I'm rolling on the stock E1s. Right now I have a set of cheaper 205/55 all seasons on them right now and they get the job done for the time being, but summer is coming up and they just won't do. I'm thinking about getting a set of 225/50/16 BFGoodrich G-Force Sports to put on them but I don't want to waste my time or money if the handling just won't be there anyway. My question is should I save up as fast as I can and get a set of 17s or 18s, or should I stick to my budget and the BFGs will work out pretty good (enough to run at gingerman at SZ07)
