Thread: More Codes then Contra

    Default More Codes then Contra

Well my check engine light was on for the last couple days, so I finally ran an OBD II scan and it came back with these:

P0153Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor circuit Slow Response - Bank No. 2.
P0420Catalyst System Efficiency below Limit - Bank No 1.
P1150Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Adaptive Fuel Limit - Bank No. 2.
P1151Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 2.

I checked these in the FAQ, but I am no mechanic, so I really don't know what they mean.

Basically my interpretation is that my cat is on the way out and it is causing the sensor(O2?)to read wrong on the other ones.

    Correct?

Any help would greatly be appreciated, and sorry if this question has been asked a bunch of times already, I am a noobie and I have to leave for work soon, so I had no time to search the forums.

Is it safe to drive the car like this for a few days before I repair it, or can it cause further damage?

    Thanks.

It will be fine for a few days. The Upstream Bank 2 is the one next to the radiator, closest to the oil filter. Remove the oil filter for more room and easier removal. Need a 7/8 inch open wrench, or 22 mm or O2 sensor removal tool ($12).

As for the P0420, what year and how many miles? Federal Cat Warranty is 8 years/80K miles. If above that, I would suggest trying the cheap and easy things first.

The P0420 could be many things. Maybe it is inefficient precats (and time for mileliminators.)

    From TSB,

    CATALYST EFFICIENCY MONITOR

P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)Indicates Bank 1 catalyst system efficiency is below the acceptable threshold.

    Damaged Catalytic Converter:
    · Use of leaded fuel

Did you have work done recently on the car? It looks like your bank 2 upper O2 isn't even hooked up.

I just bought the car about 2 weeks ago.

I had a local mechanic look at it.

Said it was perfect except it needed a coolant flush.

Do you think it would be possible that he purposely unhooked the O2, thinking I would come back to him for repair?

If I had to make a guess, he accidentally knocked it and it came out. Or maybe it is time for a new sensor.
