Thread: oil?

    Default oil?

well i changed my oil today. but i am kinda worrying now. i've always used 5w30 regular oil (mobil or castrol gtx) for the past 3 years, and today i decided to go with synthetic. so i got some kind of engine flush thing. i put it in, left the car on idle fo 10min, then removed all the oil while still hot (bad idea but that's what the instructions were) and then added 5qt of mobile 1 5w30 full synthetic and 1qt of lucas oil conditioner for synthetic oil (or whatever its called).
well the thing is that its a 98 E0 csvt with 106k+ miles on it. I know the engine has been changed by ford in 2000 so the engine should have less miles on it...but was that a bad idea? did i do it right? huh? should i have stayed with regular oil? I have red many people saying that leaks will occur (never had them so far). the guy at Auto Zone said that if the engine has ran on regular oil the first 5k miles, and then switch it to synth, it will destory all the gaskets, and the engine would be damaged pretty fast leading to rebuilding the engine...huh? true? have any of you changed to synthetic at high milage (say between 70-110k miles)

i just need some opinions, coz as i searched the old forums, there are all kinds of statements.

It didn't hurt to switch to synthetic. You probably didn't need the flush. You most certainly did not need the Lucas Snake Oil. You probably didn't do any damage other than the dent in your wallet.

    LOL at the Autozone guy!!

I switched at around 50k, I think. Simple drain and fill, with the engine warm. No worries.

Switched to Mobil 1 @ 125k miles, no leaks so far. I was nervous about that too, but so far it was unfounded.

If that car had used dino oil for a long time, doing the flush out was not a bad idea, sometimes putting in synthetic breaks up some of the accumulated gunk. You got some of that gunk out with the flush instead of having it suspended in your new fresh synthetic oil.

Current thinking is that the best MTX fluid may be the newest Ford synthetic fluid. Also called "Ford Honey" for it's color. It's pricy though, at about $20.00 a quart.

For this application, stay away from RedLine MTL. Many have reported that they have done well with Torco and Royal Purple. There have been threads on this recently if you want to search back a little.
