    Default Dampening/Quieting Bassani Exhaust..Help

I recently purchased a mid pipe from Bassani for my Bassani Cat-back. So I have an extra one laying around that I am going to chop up and weld in a nice resonator.

I wanted to know what would be the best way to significantly lower the sound of my exhaust without sacrificing performance!. The Piping is 2.25 inches.

I was thinking of a 24" magnaflow w/ a 20" body, but then again these things usually are straight through and dont do much to shut the exhaust not up. What would be your suggestions as I constantly get pulled over in towns for having an exhaust system too loud!

    Thanks in advance

See you have to make a choice i guess, noise reduction......or.....power.

See i have headers, bat y-pipe with high flow car. Stock edelborck rpm resonator and stock mufflers.

It sounds awesome. Its quiet but flows great. I had the stock resonator on for the longest time because i just hated the drone. After traps recommendation of the edelbrock rpm muffler, i installed that muffler in place of the resonator. It sounds like something you really are looking for also.

Since they don't sell the 5503 edelbrock muffler.

I would seriously install a borla muffler. this one.

Im not really looking for a brand to choose, but more of answering another question.

What is the different between an Oval or Fully Round(a bit larger than the same size as the pipe).

Is there more dampening with an Oval Muffler compared to a Round muffler.

As both of them would still be straight thru!

Remember I do not want to shut my exhaust up! But if any of you have or heard the Bassani Exhaust kit(you would understand how loud it is),

I would also like to kill the bit of rasp you get when the car is cold.

Take in mind I also have Headers and a 3L which really boosted the sound from loud to insane loud! (Cant wait to get my y-pipe to unleash some horsies)

I posted this months ago, but i searched and decided to post it up for you. I guess I'm in a nice mood....

Now a resonator is a a pipe. Inside the pipe is like a screen mesh that wraps the inside walls of the pipe. Nothing is obstructing the pipe itself. So it flows great. Since the sides are not smooth and are surrounded by a mesh design, this causes air to not flow as smoothly as flowing on a smooth surface. This mesh causes the exhaust to almost vibrate off the mesh reducing sound but not hurting flow as much. This is the best for have great flow but reduce sound minimally.

Now a muffler has several types of designs.

Some have what we call baffles. Plates welded on the inside to help send exhaust flow in patterns. Which helps reduce sound. These type of mufflers really do reduce sound the best. On the other hand they also restrict the flow more. Because it has canals that exhaust must follow. So it takes longer for the exhaust to exit the muffler. Like in this picture.

Then you have some series of mufflers that are a straight through design. Like for example the maganaflow race series. In this series it offers a muffler that has no baffles. But A style kinda like a resonator. It has the wire mesh that is inside a resonator. But they place this circular wire mesh threw a muffler. The rest of the body of the muffler they place a fiberglass detonating material to help absorb the sound. Seeing that this design has alot less of an obstruction the volume of sound is increased over the baffle style system.

    Perfect example is this picture

Now this is the tip of the iceberg. There are many muffler designs out there. You just have to find the style/sound you are looking for.

Hey Amyn, sorry to hijack your thread, but since we're pretty much in the same situation, I'll ask :

Is there a significant difference in power between the stock exhaust and the Bassani kit? Beside the sound, can it be measured? I guess that it's a bit more free flowing, but without headers, my guess is probably something around 1-2hp, maybe a bit quicker throttle response. Am I right?

I'd give it around +-4-6whp. Just replacing our resonator with a high flow will add 2-3whp. Then increasing the size of the exhaust diameter and better mufflers is where you gain the rest.

People have dyno'd 18whp gains just from doing a tru-dual exhaust. 2 resonators and 2 mufflers only. With stock manifolds.

That being said, its the front end of the exhaust...Manifolds, y-pipe, cat. That our restrictive. Then the resonator. The rest is good .

I think I am going to go with a race series muffler which is more of an oval yet still straight thru!

I am currently set on this the oval Muffler even tho it is straight through it should dampen the sound a lot more!

This is a 4"x9" Oval muffler so I just wanted to know if there is enough space down there to just order weld this sucker and replace it with the straight pipe that is on the car right now. I dont have anything welded its all clamped as originally setup to be at BASSANI!!!

    Thanks for the input guys!
