Thread: F_ing Wheel Bearing

  1. #1

    Default F_ing Wheel Bearing

yep.. all those sounds I've been speaking of.. weren't rotors.. its the front left wheel bearing. i picked one up today but I have to wait until monday to get it done..

my mech says not to worry about it.. the tire won't fly off, but im taking it easy. trying not to go over 40-50mph.

but other than that yea.. CSVT 2 Jeff 0. (this car is kicking my arse)

first axle.. now wheel bearing.. i think i should throw a poll up here just for fun.. what's going to go next.

i think brakes. car has around 83,500 miles

    Hmmmmmm.......

Also, something to add to this, if the wheel bearing is not pressed correctly, it will fail very quicky. Second, if the old axle nut is reused, that can also cause it to fail early.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the side the axle broke on?

Yep, I think you know what I'm getting at here. I just don't want to see you replace the bearing again soon.

what do you mean by machined? I think you need a new mechanic ... there is no machining involved, you remove the snap rings and press the old bearing out and press the new bearing in and reinstall the snap rings ... any automotive shop should have a bearing press and some parts stores or machine shops ...

for the hell of it you might want to make sure the axle nut is torque correctly to 210 ft/lbs although you might notice it in the brakes if they where not ....

as for wheel bearing going bad, my fathers car needed 3, one was pressed in wrong and lasted a year, my mother car needed a passanger side one, my contour also needed a passanger side bearing and my mystique needed both iirc

at least you didn't have to do this to get the axle out ...

well he's my buddy.. hes the one that did my axle.. he said it has to be pressed like you guys said.. thats the only reason it has to be sent out.. i have to rock my moms mini van to bring desi back to school.. its weird because all day there was no grinding out of the car.. at all. it's like it fixed itself over night.. what ever.. she's going in tomorrow to get fixed.. and ill have her back tomorrow.. yay.

oh and thanks for the clutch votes you guys.. my driving isn't that bad. ha

the car is fixed.. as far as i know. i supplied my own wheelbearing.. and my buddy did the labor at the shop, i guess when trying to take something off he broke the tie rod... and i got charge for it at list price.. i just feel like i shouldn't have been charged at all..

now im in despret need for an alignment. brakes have to be done.. ah!

that sucks that he charged you for the tie rod.
but was he doing you a favor?
meaning did he cut you a deal on the labor, or was he doing this off the books?
in that case i can see him charging you, at least he only charged you list price.

maybe the tie rod was messed up in the first place. i've personally seen one of mine snap in two for no reason when getting one of my wheel brearings replaced. sucked, but my mechanic didn't break it.
